I believe this book is more readable and more or less it's kind of short notes and comprehensively cover most of the important mechanisms. The layout is easy to understand. I would very much happy to prefer this book to any student who is doing organic chemistry.

Very gripping, enjoyable read

I just finished this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. The beginning grabbed me with force ... I wondered if the book might be a Suspense bordering on Terror it was so gripping, and I was away from home with no wi-fi to check and see since I'd downloaded it months ago. But I kept reading and it settled down and brought in some different characters. This book, like many newer ones, vascilates between two different scenarios: Roger Kenwick, a young writer back from war; and the Morgans - a brother and sister who know Roger well from college days. The book was written a while back, but I always enjoy viewing life from 100 years ago or so - so much less complicated in so many ways. Anyway, it was a shorter book than the typical ebook and it went quite fast. The only reason I didn't give it a 5-star was that I thought that too much information was withheld until the last minute, and it would have been helpful if a few tidbits had been provided earlier in the book so I could have understood the main character a bit better. But I definitely recommend this book if you like a good, clean, suspenseful yarn that is extrememly well-written. The ending is excellent! Kuddos Ms. Porter.

I was lost, then I was found

Wow, this one was a bit confounding. Overall a great story, though I got a little lost in certain sections and had to reread some.
This one is more of the mind, not so much as action. The main character was one for which I felt so sad. Lives just don't stay on a good course, this one went from bad to worse in a multi-level plot. The last few chapters really make you turn those pages to get to the end. This is a great, old style mystery using vocabulary you don't hear today. It is worth the time to read this one.

Yes...lost then found!

At first I thought this was going to be some type of poltergeist story & almost deleted it by the 3rd chapter. But since I didn't have many more books downloaded on my Kindle I continued & finished it. As another review stated...I was lost then I was found. This is an OK book but I don't like being confused so much that when it transfer'd over to give you the idea of what this book was about it was "well, that's better". Unless you're really wanting to go thru the background of the book (at the beginning) I wouldn't really reccomend it.

Misleadingly titled, this book promises more than it delivers. Though a highly readable history of Malcolm X and the black nationalist movement, as an investigation it offers only circumstantial evidence--with relatively few new revelatons--about the role government security agents played in the events leading to Malcolm's assassination on Feb. 21, 1965. Freelance writer Evanzz, drawing on FBI files and a wide range of other sources, correctly criticizes the FBI's hasty conclusion that Malcolm's murder had no "international implications." Yet the facts that the FBI harassed Black Muslims and infiltrated the organization and that the CIA targeted Third World leaders like Fidel Castro and Patrice Lumumba do not necessarily justify Evanzz's conclusion that the intelligence community "probably" decided to kill Malcolm because of his plans to bring the plight of "the American Negro" before the United Nations. Evanzz tends to preface his chapters with portentous quotes that suggest he will reach more solid conclusions than he does. Photos not seen by PW. 40,000 first printing.

While the authors of these two studies of the assassination of Malcolm X have examined the same primary source materials, they have arrived at opposite conclusions. Evanzz is a journalist who spent 15 years researching the case; Friedly is a researcher at the Martin Luther King Jr. Papers Project at Stanford University. Evanzz builds a strong case for the conspiracy theory, while Friedly gives it very little credence. Evanzz also delves more deeply into African American history and has interviewed over 200 individuals involved in the Black Power Movement. The "Judas" Evanzz refers to is John Ali, whom he concludes conspired with the CIA to assassinate his former friend. Friedly points out, however, that the New York City Police Department did a poor job of protecting Malcolm X and has yet to release its files of the case. Both authors clearly show that the CIA and FBI were concerned about Malcolm X's growing power, especially after he and Elijah Muhammad had gone their separate ways. The FBI was worried that Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were going to join forces, while the CIA was concerned about Malcolm X's visits to African leaders and what this might mean for American race relations. Since Evanzz and Friedly had access to more sources than previous authors, their studies add new insights into Malcolm X's life, death, and role in African American history. A lot more than just the plot to kill Malcolm X.

This is an excellent book on this important subject. Persons with strong ties to the Nation of Islam hated Malcolm X and murdered him, but this was after the CIA and FBI had played some "dirty tricks" on Malcolm and Elijah Muhammad. The FBI's COINTELPRO was what forced the schism to develop between those two men, which led, inexorably, to Malcolm's murder. The book reads almost like a crime novel; you know he's going to die, but who's going to do it? That part of the book is well worth the cost of buying it and the time to read it, but the history of the NOI, and their beliefs, particularly about "Master Wallace Fard Muhammad," the founder of the group, is an unexpected bonus. This man, who had five aliases just in Detroit, and another one in Los Angeles, was a WHITE man who convinced a bunch of black people that he, too, was black. His real name was "Ford," but now the Black Muslims say that the white guy who was arrested in L.A., for armed robbery, and sent to San Quentin Prison, was a bloody impostor, and not Allah (God) in the flesh, as they claim "Fard" was. Unfortunately, there aren't any pictures in this book. I have a book on my back, metaphorically speaking, but I still like to look at pictures, like the ones in the biography of Elijah Muhammad which show him, along with George Lincoln Rockwell, the head (fuhrer) of the American Nazi Party, with several members of his Storm Troopers, all in Nazi regalia, at a service presided over by Elijah Muhammad in his Chicago Mosque. Hysterical!

Excellent, but big problem if you like footnotes.

Excellent research and biography, BUT FOOTNOTES ARE UNUSABLE. All the footnotes are listed in the back of the book by chapter, and each individual footnote is numbered. But in the actual chapters in the book, there is not any footnote numbers listed to the appropriate text! Therefore, all of the footnotes at the end of the book cannot be connected to the text in the chapters, and so, they're totally useless.

A brother like Malcolm X deserves to be honored and respected. We must keep his dream and legend alive. It's hurtful to know so many disgusting acts took place from the hands of my own people. This was a painful truth but it's a necessary truth to know.... Must Read

More Historiography Than History

This is an extremely brief review of about 200 years of history of the sub-continent, covering modern India, Pakistan and Bangladesh (with extremely brief nods to Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan). It is written for college- or graduate-level readers or, more likely, professors of Indian or Pakistani history. Because the two authors are far more interested in discussing trends in South Asian historiography than in actually reporting the facts, I do not recommend this book for anyone interested in history.

The book starts with ancient history (Mohenjodaro and Harappa) and covers through 1997 (with updated material in later editions), but it is clear that the authors are more interested in the late colonial period, and far more interested in Partition and post-Partition. They breeze through the pre-Islamic era and the Mughals quickly and shallowly. That's understandable and expected in a book on "Modern" South Asia, but when they come to the colonial period, they still devote more time to causes, effects, and intellectual cross-currents than to what actually happened. For a reader with a very solid foundation in sub-continental history, the focus on how modern scholarship has changed traditional understandings may be a welcome change from a bare recitation of the facts. But that means this is less a work of history, and more a work of historigraphy. I finished it knowing more about what scholars think about what happened in India than about what happened in India.

A few examples: the authors introduce the Indian National Congress on p. 107, but never explain what it is, who was in it, and what it did, except for what can be gleaned piecemeal over then next 140 pages. We are told on p. 122 that when "viceroy Hardinge made a ceremonial entry on an elephant into New Delhi in 1912, he was greeted with a Bengali revolutionary's bomb." So was Hardinge killed? The authors do not say. More to the point, who was Hardinge? A viceroy who rode an elephant once, is all I can get from the text. Apparently someone named Radcliffe was responsible for drawing the partition lines. Who was Radcliffe? The authors don't say (and in a book primarily focused on Partition, that is an especially unusual omission). Maybe the best example pertains to Gen. Zia ul Haq: "When Zia vanished into fire and ash in August 1988 the fiscal crisis of the state was visible to all" (p. 234). That's certainly evocative, but if you don't already know that he was killed in a plane crash, it's also quite bizarre.

The authors write of the 1857 revolt that "[i]t is simpler, certainly far less controversial, to catalogue the course and extent of the rebellion than to analyze its character" (p. 92). Undoubtedly true. And yet, in a history book, that seems an important thing to do. That sentence captures the essence of my view of the book: this is a history where the authors forgot the include the section on history.

Read this book if you already know the history of South Asia, and if you want an admirable bibliograhy. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

Brilliant & well researched

Modern South Asia represents another attempt by Sugata Bose and Ayesha Jalal to wrest control of the past from those who control the present. Cutting right through the lies published in official history text books, Bose and Jalal make a clear, convincing and appealing argument: Partition was the result of misplaced assumptions and opportunism on the part of both Hindu and Muslim leadership. Classification of Muslims as a nation instead of a minority was initially only a tactic to ensure equal representation at the center. It is a great irony of history that it led to the disintegration of the same center. The book is generally well written although the poetry translations could be improved. It should, however, not be treated as a first introduction to the history of the region but as a commentary on partition which created the identities: indian and pakistani, and subsequent events which led to their objectification. A must-read.

Good overview but lacking anything new or revealing

Although this book may serve to guide people through South Asia, it doesn't really explain or go into the complexities of the region. In the case of Pakistan we do not get a complete picture of its varied past as western Pakistan isn't South Asia, but is instead more Middle Eastern as it is populated by speakers of Iranian languages (as opposed to the Indic tongues spoken in eastern Pakistan) Pashtuns and Baluchis. Also the Hindu-Muslim struggles are reduced to religion rather than adding the linguistic and cultural divisions prevalent to this day. For being tauted as revisionist there seems to be little revisionism just different wording.
