Very useful for practicing power systems engineers and academia.

I am using this book as a reference and found that it has a lot of information and answers to most of my questions for my project work. It has quite a detailed analysis and good techinal information. For example, symmetrical comopnenats and ANSI/IEEE and IEC short circuit calculations. It has extensive chapters on load flow analysis and harmonic filters. The second edition includes wind power and arc flash analysis which I found very useful. I recommned to practicing engneers engaged in electrical power systems.

compelling account of a man defying the odds!

Absolutely captivating. It is memorizing to be immersed in the story of a man who defies all odds to survive physically, mentally emotionally and spiritually through what must be one of the most enduring stories of survival in history. Witnessing the experience, the will, the mental fortitude, the skill and the transformation left me as a reader appreciating and sympathizing with Alveranga as he moves through this truly unique experience. I encourage any reader with a hint of curiousity about the story to read this book! It was intriguing to understand not only how he did it but how the experience changed him. Truly fascinating.

This is the story of Salvadore Alvarenga who survived 438 days at sea, in which he drifted 6,000 miles over the Pacific Ocean.
Overall I rated this book four and a half stars out of five. This was a truly amazing story, it is a one of a kind story. The kind you will only hear once in your lifetime. It is one of those stories that you have trouble believing that it's true. I really liked how this book included relevant information/facts and opinions coming from specialists, in that they backed up as well as enriched Salvadore Alvarenga's remarkable survival at sea. I am in awe of Salvadore, in his humility and his optimism, in how he never gave up. Just close your eyes for a moment, and imagine that you are stranded at sea. What would you do? How would you survive? To find out how Salvadore Alvarenga survived you must read this book for yourself

TOO MUCH WATER!!

The Cruel Sea......generally unforgiving...delivered this hungry little fella to a beach in the Marshall Islands.When you see the photos of his boat is when you should be quite surprised. This was good reading for me! Franklin kept it rolling along and managed to 'put you there'...which is the mark of a clever scrivener. It was fairly arduous in its entirety but no less compelling when you consider the suffering this man endured.Not to mention the abject fear when weighing up the possibilities he may be flailing around with the sharks who verily wanted to eat him. What a horrible thought to be tortured with daily for months. That the story had a dramatic component was not going to ensure its success in literature.That was going to depend on the ability of the author to deliver...and for me Franklin succeeded.

Information is an important feature of the modern world. Mathematical techniques underlie the devices that we use to handle it, for example, mobile phones, digital cameras, and personal computers.

This book is an integrated introduction to the mathematics of coding, that is, replacing information expressed in symbols, such as a natural language or a sequence of bits, by another message using (possibly) different symbols. There are three main reasons for doing this: economy, reliability, and security, and each is covered in detail. Only a modest mathematical background is assumed, the mathematical theory being introduced at a level that enables the basic problems to be stated carefully, but without unnecessary abstraction. Other features include:

• clear and careful exposition of fundamental concepts, including optimal coding, data compression, and public-key cryptography;
• concise but complete proofs of results;
• coverage of recent advances of practical interest, for example in encryption standards, authentication schemes, and elliptic curve cryptography;
• numerous examples and exercises, and a full solutions manual available to lecturers from www.springer.com

This modern introduction to all aspects of coding is suitable for advanced undergraduate or postgraduate courses in mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, or informatics. It is also useful for researchers and practitioners in related areas of science, engineering and economics.

excellent basic text

I'll be teaching an undergraduate course out of this text next semester. Sections are short, with a few exercises after each one. Proofs are included. Wide selection of basic selected topics in information theory, coding theory (including Huffman codes as well as some error-correcting codes such as Hamming codes), and cryptography. This book is useful for someone who is interested in those topics and wants to have a carefully written but basic introduction. In my opinion, Biggs is a terrific writer, the same one who wrote the Discrete Mathematics book published by Oxford Univ Press.

Dejan Sarka, MCT and SQL Server MVP, is an independent trainer and consultant who focuses on the development of database and business intelligence applications, located in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Besides his projects, he spends around half of his time on training and mentoring. He is the founder of the Slovenian SQL Server and .NET Users Group. Dejan is the main author and co-author of many books and courses about databases and SQL Server. He is a frequent speaker at many worldwide events.

Milos Radivojevic

Milos Radivojevic is a database consultant in Vienna, Austria. He is a Data Platform MVP and specializes in SQL Server for application developers and performance and query tuning. Currently, he works as a principal database consultant in bwin (GVC Holdings) the largest regulated online gaming company in the world. Milos is a cofounder of PASS Austria. He is also a speaker at international conferences and speaks regularly at SQL Saturday events and PASS Austria meetings.

William Durkin

William Durkin is a DBA and data platform architect for CloudDBA. He uses his decade of experience with SQL Server to help multinational corporations achieve their data management goals. The first president born after America's independence ushers in a new era of no-holds-barred democracy

The first "professional politician" to become president, the slick and dandyish Martin Van Buren was to all appearances the opposite of his predecessor, the rugged general and Democratic champion Andrew Jackson. Van Buren, a native Dutch speaker, was America's first ethnic president as well as the first New Yorker to hold the office, at a time when Manhattan was bursting with new arrivals. A sharp and adroit political operator, he established himself as a powerhouse in New York, becoming a U.S. senator, secretary of state, and vice president under Jackson, whose election he managed. His ascendancy to the Oval Office was virtually a foregone conclusion.

Once he had the reins of power, however, Van Buren found the road quite a bit rougher. His attempts to find a middle ground on the most pressing issues of his day-such as the growing regional conflict over slavery-eroded his effectiveness. But it was his inability to prevent the great banking panic of 1837, and the ensuing depression, that all but ensured his fall from grace and made him the third president to be denied a second term. His many years of outfoxing his opponents finally caught up with him.

Ted Widmer, a veteran of the Clinton White House, vividly brings to life the chaos and contention that plagued Van Buren's presidency-and ultimately offered an early lesson in the power of democracy.

In the latest volume of Arthur Schlesinger's American Presidents series, Widmer (Young America) paints a brief but elegant portrait of our eighth president, who, Widmer says, created the modern political party system, for which he deserves our "grudging respect." Andrew Jackson's successor, Martin Van Buren (1782–1862) was also at various times Jackson's secretary of state, ambassador to the Court of St. James's and vice president. As Widmer relates, some newspapermen called the New York Democrat "the little magician" because of his diminutive frame and his deftness at political sleight of hand. Others—who criticized his response when the American economy ground to a halt shortly after his election in 1836—called him "Martin Van Ruin." Despite the collapse of financial markets in 1837, Van Buren held fast to his belief in the Jacksonian principles of limited federal government, states' rights and protection of the "people" from the "powerful." This led him to reject calls for a national bank and an independent treasury. Throughout his term, Van Buren effectively took no federal action to alleviate the economic crisis. Thus it was not surprising when, despite building the Democratic Party into a well-oiled machine, he went down to defeat after just one term, beaten by William Henry Harrison, the Virginian Whig of aristocratic background who posed as a simple rustic. All this Widmer relates powerfully, engagingly and efficiently.

Clinton administration speechwriter Widmer sparks his assessment of the eighth president with the contemporary allusions, color, and humor of a good speech. Van Buren had a tough, undistinguished single term (1837-41). The first great U.S. depression hit days after he succeeded his mentor, Andrew Jackson, and he declined to deal with slavery, which became an elephant-in-the-bedroom issue during his administration. His finest achievements preceded and followed his presidency. After John Quincy Adams' 1824 selection as president by the House of Representatives despite Jackson's winning a plurality of the vote, Van Buren, a consummate schmoozer and deal maker, built the Democratic Party, mollifying the slave-holding South to do so. In 1848, however, he led the antislavery Free Soil ticket, at the risk of destroying the party he had created. Further endearing him, Van Buren was the first rags-to-riches president and the first (of two; the other is Kennedy) lacking Anglo-Saxon forebears. Contra Widmer, however, he didn't enjoy the third-longest postpresidency, after Hoover and Carter, but the fifth, after Adams I and Ford, as well. Ray Olson

A good overview of a troubled presidency.

If you are looking for the definitive biography on Martin Van Buren, this is probably not the book to read. However, if you want to know something about this relatively obscure president who became president at the worst possible time and don't want to invest a great deal of time, this is your book. Ted Widmer has done an outstanding job in his series of giving you the high points and low points of the presidents he profiles. Think of it as the Cliff Notes for presidents. It is well researched but lacks some of the anecdotes most readers are accustomed to when reading presidential biographies.
