The Definitive Resource

This fourth volume covering the 2000s is equal in quality to the first three volumes covering the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. My review of the first volume also applies to this volume and is reproduced below.

This four volume set of books describes the history of the role-playing industry from its infancy to the present. The amount of information contained in these books is staggering. That one individual was able to bring to fruition such a monumental undertaking is beyond impressive. Even more impressive is the quality of the writing. As a player of RPG's, I imagined that I might have a modest interest in the behind-the-scenes story. Here, the books are organized very well. Each individual chapter is self-contained and told in a very interesting and readable way. The four books don't have to be read cover to cover in order. Rather, readers can peruse individual chapters on specific companies. Where references to other chapters are given, just enough information is provided to allow the reader to understand the context without being over redundant. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this and how much I learned from it. Taken together, the content, the writing, the editorial judgment in finding a balance for including the appropriate amount of detail without being bogged down in minutiae results in a really exceptional book on the subject. One imagines that this four-volume series will become the seminal reference for any study of the RPG industry from 1970-2009. For those readers who think they might have an interest in understanding the history of the RPG industry, this is clearly the definitive work.

The source for the D20 history as well as the TRPG indie boom.

I played a lot of tabletop games during the 80's and 90's and while I don't have as much time as I used to I wish I did. I also happen to be a game scholar so this book series (see note below) was a welcome addition to my bookshelf and I read them all with great interest. I'd recommend looking at all the volumes in the series (70's, 80's, 90's, 00's). My score and review are for the volume above. Overall I'd rate the entire series as 5 stars. Comments specific to this volume are below:

This is still a great book and I'm only giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because I think it's the weakest in the series. That being said, this book has two major strengths: (1) It's pretty comprehensive in its coverage of the D20 boom/bust and (2) It's a good reference/starting point for the indie tabletop RPG movement. It's main weaknesses lie in the sense I got that the author was too close to the source material - in particular in the indie tabletop parts. I also get the feeling that I'll appreciate this volume more highly in another ten years or so, as well see how things have shaken out for the different companies that are covered.

Wonderful writing, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in our hobby. As in the earlier ones, this book is a love letter to the gamers of old, and the gamers of today. Get all four.

Shannon Evans is an author, instructor, developmental editor, and worthy adviser for creative professionals who want to set themselves apart from the pack. Her books provide a common sense approach to technical information in ways that allow her readers to think differently about subjects while offering them practical tools to implement. Drawing on her extensive writing and editing experience as well as her own publishing journey she is currently working on a "How to Get Non-Fiction into Print" series. Shannon began her career as a writer and publisher of her own nickel paper in grade school. The paper, while highly popular was short lived due to the lack of technology to support replication. She continued publishing underground news papers and pamphlets throughout her years of schooling. If you are even considering getting into Twitter, get this book!

I started reading this book and almost immediately started saying things like, "I didn't know that", or "Well, that makes sense, why didn't I think of that?", or even a few versions of "Huh?". The book isn't written over my head, nor is it under my ability. Let me give you a better idea. I'm no genius. I frequently misspell frequently misspelled words. I'm no slouch either. I'm proud of the fact that I essentially taught myself much of what I needed to know in order to pass the tests that helped get me in a classroom. I guess I'm average.

But in being average, I feel that I'm like a lot of people out there. I use Twitter, but probably not to the full potential. I have a blog, but I'm sure I could do more with it. Just like a lot of other people out there. Given that, I feel uniquely qualified to tear into this book and give it a good once-over.

I think this book is essential for those who want to use Twitter for more than telling us what you are making for dinner. When I talk to young people, many want to start some sort of business. That's great, and for those people I suggest finding ways to use Twitter to their best advantage. The Definitive Twitter Guide should be your first stop.

This book is extremely well written, to the point that it could hold my attention long enough for me to read it, start following it, and get up here and write a bunch of words about it. If you are like me, young enough to use Twitter but old enough to be slightly intimidated by the tech, Shannon makes the information accessible.

The PF guy in me wants to leave it at "buy this book", but the teacher in me feels the need to jump in as well. Any of my students will tell you that I rarely give "A's". This is one of those times.

A few months ago, I dragged my mother (a woman in her late 60s) onto Facebook. She has a hard time getting used to it. In fact, she'd like to delete her account but she doesn't know how. Unlike my mom, businesses need to use social media to build relationships, engage with potential customers, and promote themselves. But businesses, like my mother, often don't understand how to use social media tools--like Twitter. This is where Shannon Evans' book, The Definitive Twitter Guide: Making Tweets Work for Your Business, is most valuable. This book will help not only businesses fully understand and use Twitter's potential but also individual Twitter newbies.

I should first provide a bit of context for my review. I've been on Twitter for two years. I've found it to be a wonderful tool for networking, making friends, and keeping up with the latest news (I love to be the first one to know things--just ask my hub). However. Getting on Twitter and figuring things out can be a daunting and time-consuming experience. This book provides both a history of the social media platform and an instruction manual for using it. First and foremost, Evans emphasizes that Twitter enables relationships and can aid your business only as much as you commit to building relationships via tweets.

Evans starts with the simple premise of twitter and builds on it. At the beginning of each chapter you get the "dummies" version of a concept related to tweeting and by the end of it you've got a map for advanced and streamlined twitter use. While her writing voice is authoritative, Evans explains things in layman's terms. This is a quick read and I love how the book demystifies social media without a lot of social media jargon. In some parts, Evans is downright funny (like when she calls spammers "carnies" on page 73). The organization and graphics in this book are great, serving to demystify the ins and outs of tweeting and advanced twitter use. While the title suggests that her audience consists of those wanting to learn more about Twitter for business purposes, Evans' book would be great for anyone looking to improve the quality of their tweets and the depth of their personal/professional networks.

The book has two problems and they have more to do with the genre than with the actual text. The 'real-life' examples of Twitter success in business and non-profits are really just excerpts rather than case studies. I wanted extended examples but then I'm a sucker for narrative (and that's probably why I wanted more). Newbie twitter users will be glad about Evans' judicious use of examples and the attention she gives instead to the hows and whys of tweeting. Secondly, the nature of this genre (social media instruction) threatens the long-term value of this book. Technology evolves so rapidly these days that, while I can't predict that Twitter will be passe in the next few years, some of these third party clients listed in the book might be. Still, if you want to learn how to use twitter or if you want to take your tweeting to the next level, this is a great book. I've been tweeting for over two years and still found a lot of useful information to hone my tweets. For example, I love the DM-ing tips on page 77 and also I realized I'm sometimes guilty of those "me, me, me!" tweets she cites as poor practice. Chapter 9 outlines ways to measure how tweeting can affect a business so I intend to use that info to gauge how tweeting affects my blog's traffic. Bottom line: newbie tweeps will benefit *greatly* by using this book. Experienced tweeps will enjoy Evans' book and learn some tricks they didn't know before.

this made me smile , cry, and love and made me feel mad . a mixture of emotions, an undying love, the beauty of friendship and unimaginable sacrifices , this book kills. once you get it you just cant put it down , it is one of the most amazing books to be read and it would even make a great movie. most times i was just screaming of happiness and i was clutching the kindle as if i couldnt believe what was happening. i am not forcing people to do anything but i am just saying that this book was awesome and very beautiful. i would consider you reading the 1 sg bpok first so you will get an overview on the characters and a brief talk abput emma. i fpund it amazing and beautiful of how the author could build up so mich emotions in each of the characters it is just practically amazing.

Sauntering for the Soul

Margaret is a dedicated walker, but not just through her beloved hollow or the streets of the various big cities in which she has landed throughout her life. Margaret walks with God. That sounds a little higher and mightier than it should for someone who is so down to earth, and more than she would be comfortable reading, I suspect, but it is true. The practical simplicity and intentional exercise of discovery that an unhurried walk invites is reflective of the revealed tenor of her companionship with the Holy One, and it is this simplicity of discovery to which she invites all of us within these pages.

Through well-crafted storyweaving of personal experience and Scripture, we are given time and space to step onto the path ourselves with those who have walked before us: Adam & Eve, Moses, the Israelites, Mary the mother of Jesus and Joseph her husband, Jesus himself and a number of others whose walking and stumblings are recorded for us in Scripture. We can retrace the well-traveled paths of mystery, gift, disappointment, wonder and unknowing - those familiar places of transformation that we have all experienced in various ways and times in our own lives. With a wise, good humor of self and gentle bedrock orientation of belief, Margaret's own stories, musings and lessons learned offer us companionship that is not only current with our times but congruent with the Eternal Now in the kind of walking she describes. This book was purchased for a study group at my church. We are enjoying it very much, reading two chapters a week and discussing. Margaret Guenther writes so well, she is a pleasure to read. In this, she ties those stories and events from both the Old and New Testaments in the Christian Scripture to her own life, and today's world. She often gives us a new way to look at an old, old story. We are never quite sure what we will get when we pick a book for this group, but this one does not disappoint and will have us all out searching for other books by this author.

Thorough and multifaceted coverage of a fascinating topic

Arom's treatment of African music is fantastic. The reader will benefit from Arom's direct experiences with African music in many ways. Not only does he provide musical transcriptions, but also discusses the equipment and techniques used for recording. He also discusses the social aspects of the music, which are inseparable from it. There is a large section in which he shares the results of his musical analysis--specifically, the ways in which he categorizes African music based on their rhythmic activity. He creates his own analytical methdologies and creates very specific terminology to describe the rhythmic structures found in African music. As a graduate student in music theory I found this book very helpful in my research and analysis of composers who try to emulate the rhythmic structures and phenomena found in African music. It's a terrific resource.

I spent about a year-and-a-half working through 'African Polyphony and Polyrhythm' (by Simha Arom), practicing and recording the musical examples myself. There might be some confusion as to why the original recordings were not included with the book, the reason being, that the original multitrack tapes required expert interpretation (involving interaction with the Aka people themselves) to form the necessary sets and models from parts analysed individually and then in combination. This involved 'parsing' the recorded material, rather than simply reproducing it in score. However, there was a CD-ROM published in French as "Pygm�es Aka, Peuple et Musique", which contained audio examples and even an interactive sequencer allowing the user to recombine recorded fragments to form various versions of selected Aka formulae. I managed to acquire a copy with great difficulty, as this is no longer on sale due to the (now) almost obsolete format. Although it is interesting to hear the isolated parts performed by the Aka themselves, it is important to remember that even the Aka do not hear their own parts in isolation but only as part of an interwoven polyphony. One obvious criticism is the (seemingly inexplicable) absence of any in-depth discussion on vocal music, although it is explained how songs rather ingeniously form the melodic basis of horn hocket models.

ERRATA: I have found a few errors in the English translation of book VI. Those that might cause a few problems arise in the chapter `Strict Polyrhythmics'. (#1} At the top of page 248 (i.e. `the principle of inserting binary quantities into configurations bound by ternary quantities') there are, strictly speaking, three possible ways to correct the paradigmatic representation. Either the `24 minimal values' should read: `20 minimal values', or the corresponding values should read: |3.|2.2.2.2 |3.|2.2.2.2.2 to account for 24 minimal values. Alternatively, a fifth row could be inserted to include both 20 and 24 minimal values. However, since the former (20) does not apply to Central African rhythmics, I suggest it should be corrected to account for 24 minimal values. (#2} From page 272, the part of the g�s� drum for the Yasm�l� dance is (probably) inventoried in ex.82 not ex.80, so the inventory for the agoa dance is likely to be ex.80 (and certainly not ex.81 as stated, which shows `all the realisations in the first pulse of the initial figure' extracted from both the Yam�l� and agoa dances). The reason I make this assumption is that the g�s� drum variations for the agoa dance are inventoried again on page 641, this time corresponding to ex.80 not ex.82, which is less likely to be in error. (#3) On Page 284, ex.98, the first kp�l� part should have dotted quavers and not dotted crotchets. (#4} On Page 297, ex.120, the clap at position 21 should be at position 22 to reflect the isochronous handclaps in the (middle) part. (Incidentally, the polyrhythmic substructure of this rite is said to have 'hemiola-like' interweaving, when in fact there is literally a hemiola relationship between the accents of mo.kongo and the durations of the iron stips part at the beginning of each 'hemistich'.) (#5} On page 305, ex.129, the ngu� part of the m�.k�ndi model is incorrect. The attacks should occur at positions 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13, 16, 17, 20, 21, and 22. (#6} In `The association of Polyphony and Polyrhythmics' chapter on page 636, the box representing the period of the `song and harp' in the diagram of fig.7 is too short, and should be extended to correspond to two periods of the `Double bell 2' and four periods of `Double bell 1', since it stands at a ratio of 2:1 and 4:1 with these parts respectively.

I thought this was badly done. They have been sleeping together on and off for years and she has not been with anyone in all that time but he has been "on the road" and has "of course been with others". He even had a serious relationship in between returning to the heroine over and over again. I cannot see him as a hero I would want in my life if he can make a commitment to another while only showing up for sexual relations with the heroine. Why did he never make the effort with the heroine for the relationship if he loved her??? He was pathetic and she was a scared doormat!

They are sex friends, and he sleeps with other women, and only sleeps with the heroine a few times a year. I know they weren't committed but knowing he was sleeping with others women made thier love scenes seem tainted,and it ruined the book for me. she only sleeps with him, which makes me want to barf, that he gets to sleep around, and she doesnt. i didnt buy his love for the heroine, he would still be sleeping around if she hadnt gotten pregnant. if he valued her and loved her what took him so long? 6 years they were together and he was fine being apart.
why does he randomly love her? he didnt even believe it was possible that the baby was his. apparently he cant exist without her now....when he just recently got out of a serious relationship. and why would she casually sleep with someone and not find out if he is sleeping around???? they werent always careful with condoms either which made me want to hurl. there are such things as STD's condoms DO fail. here are a couple of snippets of the book.
the smartest character in the book is her doctor that tells her to take an STD test. also what was up with that ridiculous hissy fit she threw when one of his other women showed up to his house??????? she knew he was sleeping around by this point, he told her he slept around in the 6 years they were together, why did she act so offended????

also, he moved to a home to be close to her even before she got pregnant as he wanted to be with her,,....then why was he still sleeping around?????

Believable Romance

I don't often write reviews, but I REALLY like this book. It was a quick, entertaining, romantic read with very likable and realistic characters, and a believable plot.
Another component that I really enjoyed, and that which compelled me to write a review, is the internal "working mom" struggle that Chloe had throughout the book and the conflicting feelings about her pregnancy that she had because of her career. I could completely relate and I suspect that many other professional women could as well. Loved the overall theme of "Have your family and enjoy it, but don't forget who you are and what your career means to you!"
My only criticism is about the many typos, but that seems to be common with inexpensive e-books.
