About the Author
A winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, Erik H. Erikson was renowned worldwide as teacher, clinician, and theorist in the field of psychoanalysis and human development.

Joan Mowat Erikson was born in Canada; she earned her B.A. in Education at Columbia University and an M.A. in Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a teacher, writer, and craftsman and has worked with gold, silver, and precious stones. She is the author of a previous book, The Universal Bead. She is married to the noted psychoanalyst Erik H. Erikson.

I bought this book because I needed an in depth analysis of Erikson's Theory. I was happy to buy this book because it not only referenced his work and explained it well, but there was added perspective by the author that was helpful. Would suggest this book to anyone that is studying the field of psychology.

The 9th Stage of Identity Development

I love the idea of a 9th Stage of "Transcendance" (yes, it's spelled "dance") with the virtue of "faith". Joan Erikson does hint at a certain element of pessimism over the deterioration of previous stages earned, going downhill in old age. However, in the end she speaks of the 9th stage that more than makes up for those losses. I think this stage could get a little more attention ..... transcendance and faith are worth teaching alongside the other 8 stages.

I love this book! I picked it up for pennies on Amazon, and will keep in handy forever.

Do not settle for second-hand information about Erikson theory. This book is an easy read, and brings a simple understanding to the Erikson stages and crisis.

I prefer Bowen's work, but for behavioral theory assignments, this is the best money you will spend.

About the Author
Noritaka Minami is Assistant Professor of Photography at Loyola University Chicago. He has also taught at Harvard University, Wellesley College, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, University of California Berkeley, and University of California, Irvine. Minami received his BA in Art Practice from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004, and his MFA in Studio Art from the University of California, Irvine in 2011. Exhibitions of his works have been held at UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design, Las Cienegas Projects, Griffin Museum of Photography, and Kana Kawanishi Gallery. He is a recipient of grants from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and Center for Photography at Woodstock.

Julian Rose is a senior editor at Artforum and a founding principal of the award-winning design studio formlessfinder. Trained in both art history and architectural practice, he creates design work and scholarship that investigate historical and contemporary interchanges between art and architecture, focusing on problems of material, form, and tectonics. His architectural proposals have been exhibited internationally at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the MAXXI in Rome. His essays on both art and architecture have been featured in such journals as Domus, Log, Artforum, and October.

Ken Yoshida is currently an Assistant Professor in theGlobal Arts Studies Program at the University of California, Merced, where heteaches visual culture and art history.

Minami’s 1972 is an architectural document of the Nakagin Capsule Tower, designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa, each capsule was a living space of 100 square feet. The book is itself a time capsule revealing a futurist utopian lifestyle that now 40 years later seems more dystopian, as many of the capsules show signs of lives worn out. The capsules seem more like concrete cells as one imagines a life locked inside the cramped space. The photographs are elegant, and as severe as the capsules themselves. We see traces of human detritus, but the people are missing. The only saving grace is that omnipresent circular window, a porthole of a space capsule, perhaps. We imagine a life lived outside the walls, an exterior life where we are social and engage with the world. But inside, a retreat to a monk’s ascetic nothingness. Quite an idea, and in 1972 Minami has shown us a metaphor of how we live in our own little cocoons, with our own little circular apertures trying to find meaning, freedom, and escape.

A Feastful of Delight

In typical Pixar artbook fashion, the pages are filled with concept drawings, visualizations and the thought process that went behind the production of Ratatouille. Through these pages, you'll come to a realization that their success is no fluke.

The creators travelled to France to research on the restaurants, food and the people. The effort and level of detail they put into the research can be clearly seen from the artwork from the book. The concept art and renders of the food in 3D made me imagine how they will taste if they were actually real.

You'll be able to see a lot of character designs for the humans as well as the rats. Sculpted models are also provided in photos. The storyboards, as you'll see plenty, are followed strictly in the movie. The compositions and lighting are the art form itself.

This book is filled with life and food, just like the movie. It makes for a perfect coffee table book.

Awesome book

This is a really beautiful book with heaps of pre production drawings, pastel paintings, sketches and designs. Also has photographs of ideas the artists used for their paintings and interesting commentary. I really recommend it. Some of the early concept sketches of the rats made me laugh.

Good read and good practice for past tenses

So far the best and most engaging story of the Lola Lago series I have read so far. Lots of us of past tenses. I strongly recommend to install the "New Dictionary HISPANO Spanish-English v.3.0" on Kindle to help look up words.

Educated at a federal Indian boarding school, Archilde is torn not only between white and Indian cultures but also between love for his Spanish father and his Indian mother, who in her old age is rejecting white culture and religion to return to the ways of her people. Archilde's young contemporaries, meanwhile, are succumbing to the destructive influence of reservation life, growing increasingly uprooted, dissolute, and hopeless. Although Archilde plans to leave the reservation after a brief visit, his entanglements delay his departure until he faces destruction by the white man's law.

In an early review of The Surrounded, Oliver La Farge praised it as "simple, clear, direct, devoid of affectations, and fast-moving." He included it in his "small list of creditable modern novels using the first Americans as theme." Several decades later, long out of print but not forgotten, The Surrounded is still considered one of the best works of fiction by or about Native Americans.

The Surrounded: A Book for our Times

Some of the best books are those that have been retrieved from the shelf and dusted off. Such is the case with The Surrounded, first published in 1936 by the late Native American anthropologist, D'Arcy McNickle. Through this singular work of fiction McNickle attempted to generate understanding about the realities of a people and a culture disrupted and all but destroyed by assimilation into white society. The Surrounded is a measuring stick by which we can read the failures and progress of first Americans and America itself.

The Surrounded is replete with oral origin stories and native traditions juxtaposed with the poignant stories of characters representative of a culture divided and camped on the edge of extinction. Set on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana, McNickle's story revolves around Archilde Leon, a young Native American educated in white ways who struggles with feelings of alienation when he encounters the unchanged dysfunction of his own family and the longing of his tribe for the old ways:

. . . it was funny to come home and sit at his mother's feast. His eyes saw the old faces, faces he had forgotten about, never thought to see again; and now to be sitting in the circle of firelight and looking at them-but it wasn't really funny, not deeply funny. The deeper feeling was the impatience, irritation, an uneasy feeling in the stomach. Why could he not

endure them for just these few hours? Why did they make him sick? (62)

Even as he eventually softens toward his own culture, Archilde is caught up and ultimately destroyed by the influences of the reservation. Archilde's story could be that of any reservation Native today.

The Surrounded portrays a Native culture encompassed and diminished by white neighbors, white law, and a white social system. Rather than blending or accepting help, however, the people cling tenaciously to tribal loyalties, even when it means their destruction. Symbolically, Archilde attempts to rescue an emaciated mare and her foal existing in a grueling land. Despite her extreme condition, the frustrated Archilde cannot reach her-she is simply too wild to understand that he is trying to help. In a desperate attempt to save the creature, he ends up driving her to her death: "The sun had set and in the evening light a rider on a strong white horse led an unprotesting skeleton on a rope. It was grotesque" (241). Prophetically, the scene depicts his own fall, and reflects the fine line that modern first Americans walk.

McNickle's writing captured the Native American heart, at once spirited and broken, and projected it down through the years to the present. As literature that imparts empathy for the dilemma of first Americans, The Surrounded is a book for our times.

Thoughts on McNickle's The Surrounded

D'Arcy McNickle's The Surrounded, is an excellent fictional text. Written around the time that can be referredto as "forced assimilation", "The Surrounded" deals with identity conflicts affecting Native youth. Native kids are being forced to attend boarding schools in order to assimilate to white culture. The protagonist, Archilde, is torn between pursuing life within the context of white or Native tradition. His mother is Salish and his father is an immigrant farmer from Spain. This further complicates his search for identity, because, while his mother is Salish, and does not want to assimilate, his father is Spanish, and is already an example of an assimilated minority.

The text does an excellent job of incorporating the thoughts of all the characters, and it is interesting to consider what is and is not "lost in translation" between the characters. I am not speaking merely about the translation of languages, but of the ways in which the characters perceive one another, how correct these perceptions are, and to what degree these perceptions affect their actions in the novel. Native and white cultures want Archilde to assimilate in their interest. The dialogue between language and cultures is fascinating. In the beginning, Archilde seems to be very interested in white culture, but as time rolls along, and he explores the effects of assimilation on the reservation, his viewpoint begins to shift.

Archilde's progression throughout the novel and the ways in which he learns and begins to understand those around him, is written in a poignant and emotional way that does not beg sympathy. Instead, the writing asks for understanding. The reader is asked to consider the perspective of U.S. history from the other side in a way that he/she can relate to through character usage. In this way, McNickle's work is an essential read for anyone who wishes to understand a little bit better, one small piece of the complex history between colonists and Indians, as told by one who experienced it.

The Surrounded by D'Arcy McNickle is a heartaching story of the Salish Indians who were forced into a place of "in-between" through the conversion of the tribe to the Catholic faith and the loss of their reservation land, through sale, to the white man.

The narrative follows Archilde, the second to youngest son of Max Leon, a Spaniard, and Catharine, a Salish woman. Archilde is one of seven sons - each of whom has chosen to live in a sort of disregard for the traditions and desires of Max.

Every character in this book has layers of layers of complexity. Archilde is viewed by his mother as one person, his father another, and the people surrounding him as yet another. Max Leon surprises again and again with his choices, Catharine's character is a beautiful portrayal in the heartbreak that can occur when tradition is squashed beneath the ideas of "civilization," and the supporting cast provide the necessary surroundings for the story to evolve in a way that was representative of the time and history of the Salish people in Montana.

I loved this book for it's honest, relevant message. It was written in the 1930s, but continues to be a treasure of a book. The Salish live in these pages - not in their original lifestyle, but rather a as a reminder of what happens when one culture pressures another into a life and set of beliefs which are not their own.

proofreading is important, but still a fun, easy read

I would have loved to give this book more stars but I'm a stickler for the little things. I found quite a few errors with spelling, grammar, tense changes, missing words or extra words and that detracts from my reading enjoyment. The storyline was good but unfortunately all of the editing errors detracted from it. In my opinion, the book needed some extra polishing before going to publication. I will probably still seek out the other books in this series in hopes that they get better.

Procured Books 1-3 together and read them as one novel. It was a lovely quick read which I enjoyed thoroughly. Nice storyline with just enough tension to keep you on your toes and by the way, I hope Brandon rots in hell. That part is unfortunately to close to reality and we all know it happens to women all over the world (present company excluded thank you Lord)! Well done Victoria! Luv, Linda - South Africa

It"s time you indulge in this!

This book came to me as a recommendation, going through my singleness. The timing was surprisingly funny.
Anyway at first I was reluctant b/c I'm that feminist who's stuck up in her ideologies/ways of thinking & doesn't need another book that'll drain her strength through foolish arguments. Plus I just didn't have time for it!
Now to the one who fits the above description: Emerse yourself into the book!
-Trust me you won't regret it. The first chapters will actually engage your arguments, that's assuming you rarely agree with every statement that's said. Be inquisitive and ask Staci/John for clarification. Be the reader who says, "Well no, I disagree with you" or "Girl, you better explain what you mean before I..." or "How about you put it like this" or "Wow! Now that's my girl!" I know, that's how serious my reading got to lol.
-Be prepared to get some revelations about yourself. I'd suggest if you may, say a quick prayer for God to open the eyes of your heart and speak to you through Staci/John's book. It's no point to read this book for the sake of just reading. I'm just saying!
-Please have a pen & notebook, or if reading from a tablet, make use of the highlight/note-taking options! You'll thank me later lol.
-I enjoyed the authors' interpretation to the creation story and the Fall of man. Staci stresses the fact that Eve is the crown of creation, and continues to base everything she's goes through, on this fact. Ever wondered why females in society go through a lot? Well, the devil works day and night to fight against the crown of beauty, the crown of creation, Eve. Lucifer was once the most beautiful creation but after his fall, he became the angel of death. Eve on the other hand (created in God's beauty) is blessed with the gift of bringing life to the world. Won't Lucifer always be on her case seeking to destroy her due to jealousy? Sexual abuse, emotional abuse, you name it!
-The feminist part of me made sense of what I should be fighting for. Feminism in today's society has been given a negative light and even though this book doesn't address this topic, keep an eye out for the subtle points and make personal meaning out of each!
-Last but not least, this book sheds light on the amount of healing I should seek. Yes, our past should never dictate our future but it for sure explains our present. It helps to get closure, find healing, forgive yourself & others involved and move on. Grieving is healthy, and God is the best comforter in times of grief. One major lesson from my past, that this book helped point me out: Lack of grief is dangerous. The enemy uses it against you and this unknowingly or knowingly leads you deep into sin.

Beautiful and Hopeful (Describes the Book and Me)

It's a really insightful, healing book and enjoyable to read. My boyfriend and I finished it so fast and had some great, deep talks that took our relationship to another level. We're now reading Wild at Heart. After reading the book, I feel like I understand and accept myself more, and I've become really motivated and hopeful about my career goals and all of my relationships: with my parents, with friends, and with God.

There are a few places (especially in the prayers at the end of the book) where I had to take what they said with a grain of salt, because it didn't totally line up with my theology. But overall, they back up what they're saying with plenty of scriptures and real-life examples.

It was, simply, Captivating.

I first discovered John Eldredge with "Wild at Heart" which completely changed my perspective about my husband. It illuminated the way I handled situations, prayed for my man and in turn, with the power of Christ, changed our marriage. After reading the book multiple times and having the 3 things a man needs embedded in my spirit, I realized there was "Captivating"! I purchased this book a few years back, but could never get past chapter one or two. Not for lack of trying, but something kept me from reading it. It wasn't time. Starting the book over last March after my husband returned from a 3-day intensive God-seeking men's event, I felt the time was right. I needed freedom and God pointed me right to this book again. I took my time. Reading and rereading truths that Papa was revealing to me and highlighting and sharing numerous passages on practically every page. My eyes were opened and my perspective began to shift for myself. So much more could be said about how God has used this book to impact my life, but simply stated...if you are in a place you are tired of being, feeling stuck in your head about your walk with God, what he has called you to do, your place, your purpose or needing something more, read Captivating with an open heart. The discoveries you will have about yourself, or even the discoveries my husband now has had about me, are life changing. So thankful for John & Stasi Eldredge and pray we get to thank them face-to-face one day for being the mouthpiece Papa used for freedom.

The bursting of the speculative dot.com bubble, slowing US growth, and the global financial crisis and its aftermath, however, have led to radical changes in Americans' perceptions of the benefits of global trade. Many Americans believe that trade with emerging-market economies is the most important reason for US job loss, especially in manufacturing, is detrimental to American welfare and an important source of wage inequality. Several prominent economists have reinforced these public concerns. In this study, Lawrence Edwards and Robert Z. Lawrence confront these fears through an extensive survey of the empirical literature and in depth analyses of the evidence. Their conclusions contradict several popular theories about the negative impact of US trade with developing countries. They find considerable evidence that while adjusting to foreign economic growth does present America with challenges, growth in emerging-market economies is in America's economic interest. It is hard, of course, for Americans to become used to a world in which the preponderance of economic activity is located in Asia. But one of America s great strengths is its adaptability. And if it does adapt, the American economy can be buoyed by that rising tide.

Surprise: American production workers do not compete with Chinese imports.

American manufacturing companies do not compete with Chinese and other exporters from developing countries in the US market. This is the conclusion of two very competent and experienced economists. This conclusion differs from Paul Krugman and Paul Samuelson. They claimed that exports from developing countries had a negative effect on the balance of trade and employment, which appears plausible.
The authors arrived at their conclusions by going into immense detail using rigorous analytical methods. It included comparing what companies in 470 different US industry categories produced in the USA and what was imported in their fields from developing countries. They conclude that import from developing countries is not a major or significant cause in the USA of (1) high unemployment (2) lost sales of US producers at home and in their exports (3) a reduction of low skilled high level paying jobs (competition from Japan and Germany did), (4) recessions (5) an increase in economic inequality. The reason is a very simple one. The US companies are not producing in substantial volumes labor-intensive low skill products. The competitors are companies in other developed countries like Toyota and Airbus.
At one point it was thought that China was exporting a large volume of high tech products like computers and peripherals from developing countries. Detail analysis again proved that this was not the case as the high value components are produced in developed counties, with the US in the lead.
Surprisingly the US terms of trade with developing countries have been improving.
It is true that there are instances where trade with developing countries has caused displacement of jobs and depressed wages in some industries, locations and occupations. However import from developing countries is not an important cause.
The authors found that GDP/Capita is a good indicator of what a country produces. Developing counties become competitors of developing countries when their average GDP per person reaches 70% of developed countries, which according do the authors will still take more than 15 years.
Do not forget that this book is about manufacturing that represents in 2010 only 10% of employment. It shrank from 25% in 1973 t0 10% in 2010, the reasons being, productivity increases and that people are spending spent less on goods and more on services. This decline is very similar in other developed countries. Also do not forget that the importation of petroleum products is the major source of the USA negative balance of trade.
The overall goal of the USA, as the authors see it, is a transition of the US becoming a self -sustaining economy that is less reliant on government stimulus and foreign borrowing, more reliant on private activity financed by increased domestic savings. The final chapter recommends policies on how to make this transition. Restricting import from developing countries is a wrong policy.
