amazing read

I could not put the book down, I am amazed at Rachelle's strength and wisdom. I am a 62 years old woman with children and grandchildren, and yet I could learn a few things from this young girl about being positive and knowing what is really important in life. Rachelle understands what true love is, she lives it, and so deservedly she is so loved by her husband, in spite of the tremendous hurdles. I recommend the book to anybody who takes life for granted or thinks his life is not good enough..

A great read!

I didn't want to put this book down. There were times when I cried, times when I laughed, but most of all there were times when I was amazed by Rachelle's strength, her loyalty, and her understanding of the importance of friendship and love! I can't wait to see her interviews and to hear "the rest of the story".

Compelling and educational

I enjoy reading Rachelle's blogs and other posts on social media, so I've been anxiously anticipating this book. I'm also a wheelchair user, and although my situation is very different from hers (I'm a para rather than quad, from birth rather than injury), it's amazing how many of us wheeled people do share a lot of the same thoughts, experiences, and frustrations. I appreciate that Rachelle is using her experience to educate others, and thank her on behalf of those of us who may not have a backstory that is as compelling and book-worthy as hers but still face some of the same things.

Aside from the obvious lesson about living life to the fullest, I hope that after reading this book people will also begin to reevaluate any negative assumptions and behaviors they may have towards people who are physically different. I loved her thoughts about those common cliches that we all hear over and over (& never want to hear again), and I actually may have yelled an "Amen!" when she explained why "handicap" is one of those words that needs to find itself out of 21st century vocabulary. Fortunately, we live in a very different time where some challenges are being alleviated with advances in medicine, technology, and laws that make things more accessible and available to us. But as Rachelle's story shows, the greatest barriers are often attitudes, and those are quite stubborn; continued education is our greatest defense when it comes to that problem. For example, as someone not married yet, it was shocking for me to read about how many people think (and are bold enough to actually TELL them) that it's surprising that her husband stayed with her after the accident. Misconceptions about relationships and intimacy run rampant, so I'm grateful Rachelle is setting the record straight on that issue especially.

I think the only thing I wasn't crazy about in the book was that it seemed to be a bit repetitive in some places. I felt like I was reading some of the same things about her friend's journey and the progression of their friendship after the accident in a few different places throughout the book. Obviously it's a very important aspect of this book and her story; I guess I just wanted to know more about other things, too. But that's what future books are for,right? I'd love to read another book from Rachelle, especially as she and her husband experience parenthood (hopefully!) in the very near future.

A good start on continuous time markov SDE

This recent textbook is a comprehensive and really accessible review of a new field in stochastic calculus. Basics on SDE theory are developped in the first chapter, but I will not advise to start this book without a serious knowledge of standard stochastic calculus.

The chapters are really well designed, and there is an effort to make proofs clear and accessible. Congratulations to the authors, this math textbook is really easy to read.

There is a chapter devoted to applications, which is laudable, but it can be considered as a bit limited. A bridge toward discrete time Markov Switching and discrete time Markov chain models may be missing.

To make it short, this is not a book for practitioners, unless they have a strong taste for theory.

The Complete Story behind the making of The Dark Knight Trilogy!

[[VIDEOID:moOQLXC0NW0WR8]]As a big fan of what Mr. Nolan has done with the Batman character in his "Dark Knight Trilogy", this book is 300+ pages of pure joy! Every aspect of the filmmaking process is detailed in the book, accompanied by hundreds of photos (many of which I have never seen published before).

Here are the Chapters contained in the book:

1. Screenplay - how the concept of the films was born with Nolan & David Goyer, writing the scripts, and taking inspiration from the comics when crafting the story.

2. Production Design - building the sets, scouting & dressing locations, designing Batman's vehicles. Includes some concept art.

3. Cast - casting the characters, insight into the actors' process. One of the best aspects of the films is that Nolan assembles a very strong cast, even in smaller supporting roles. Obviously, much of the focus is placed on selecting Christian Bale to play Bruce Wayne.

4. Costumes & Makeup - discussion about the costumes of the film, including plenty of costume sketches. Includes detail about the evolution of Batman's suit, the Joker's makeup, Bane's mask, etc.

5. The Shoot: Batman Begins - a chronicle of the 129-day shoot, Nolan's directing style, filming on location, shooting the Tumbler chase, etc,

6. The Shoot: The Dark Knight - filming in Chicago, IMAX cameras, the hospital explosion, etc.

7. The Shoot: The Dark Knight Rises - filming in Pittsburgh and India, shooting the opening plane sequence practically, destroying a football stadium, etc.

8. Special Effects & Stunts - insight into the stunt work with effects coordinator Chris Corbould. This covers most of the big fight sequences and stunts in the three films and how they were achieved.

9. Editing, Music, and Sound - Lee Smith on editing the films, and specifically how be cut effectively between parallel story lines and action. Scoring the film, including quotes from composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard. Designing the film's sounds and mixing them effectively with the music (they discuss the clarity issue of Bane's voice).

10. Visual Effects - It seems like these films used every method of visual effects available, from models and miniatures to computer-generated effects. Specific topics include creating digital bats and the monorail crash in Batman Begins, the ferry boat sequence from The Dark Knight, and the stadium explosions in The Dark Knight Rises.

11. Marketing - A discussion about the promotion of the films. This includes traditional methods like posters (with over a dozen poster images in the book) to the unique "viral marketing" that emphasized social media to get the audience to participate in the marketing. Other topics include screening the IMAX prologues and San Diego Comic-Con.

The book also includes a foreword by Christopher Nolan and an introduction by Michael Caine. Also, printed at the end of the book is a tribute that Nolan wrote about Heath Ledger, titled "Charisma as Natural as Gravity" (originally published in Newsweek in 2008).

This is the best book about the Batman films I have ever seen, and it is one of the best "making of" movie books in general. The detail in both the text and the photographs is very impressive, and I am so excited to be able to have this wonderful book in my collection.

Great book. Great movies.

[[VIDEOID:mo22HYNWXL30NYN]]This is the making-of rather than an art-and-making-of book. So you're not going to see a lot of art. The only other artbook for the Dark Knight trilogy was The Art of Batman Begins and that wasn't very good in terms of art and content.

Having said all that, this is a great movie companion book.

It covers in detail all the three films and the complete production process. You get to read about the screenplay, production design, casting, use of visual and special effects, music and marketing. The book is packed with nice photos of the set, actors, props and vehicles, and some art illustrations.

There are chapters for the shooting of each film which I thought was short considering the length of the movies. Still, it provides great insight into how the movie was shot, and the little clues were put into each film to tie them together. You get a sense of Christopher Nolan's film making philosophy, and understand how the film was directed. He has done an incredible job portraying on big screen one of the most recognisable comic characters.

There are lots of interesting information throughout the book. Like how Anne Hathaway dressed up as Harley Quinn during a casting meeting because she misread the script, or why Nolan even considered using actual bats but ultimately turned to animated ones.

Of all the books relating to the Dark Knight trilogy, this is probably the best.

Highly recommended for fans of the movies. It's a terrific deal for a 304-page hardcover.

A Must Have For Bat Fans As Well As Film Fans!

I wasnt quite sure what I was getting when I purchased this book. I was even thinking about going to my nearest bookstore to purchase it so that I could look at it in person. However, I decided just to buy the book since I am a huge Batman fan. Anyways, the book is fantastic. The photographs in the book are top notch and really show some other sides to the film. If you like Batman, Chris Nolan, or just film in general, you owe it to yourself to pick up this book!

A fantastic book, a book I'd be proud to be in

In my mind, one of the differences between a good book and a bad one is whether I'd be proud to be a part of it.
I would NOT be interested in having my picture show up in Play? or some of the other magazines that are popular today among the non-nudists who simply want to see the pictures.
But I would be proud if my picture showed up in Lee Baxandall's great books. I met Lee in Michigan at one of the Naturist Society's conventions, and yes, my picture did show up in one of the books about five years ago.
Lee's books give plenty of interesting reading, and show what naturism is like around the world. I highly recommend his books, and I suggest that you visit one of the sites listed sometime.

only one problem the book will very good but from photo you would think it was a older book but it was the same book that i also ordered so i have two of the same book, its ok still good book, even tho the state, and fed laws making it unlawful to skinnydipping, which is a right granted by the us bill of rights, and has been around since the find of first settler of the new world,nude beaches have been lawful since new world, changed because new goverment lawmakers, anyway book is great, but mite try better pics of books can be miss leading, and better yet make it lawful, HINT HINT, LOL

About the Author

Dr. Steven Beebe is Regents’ and University Distinguished Professor of Communication Studies at Texas State University. Dr. Beebe is serving in his 28th year as Chair of the Department of Communication Studies. He has served as Associate Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication for 25 years. He is the author and co-author of twelve books, with most books in multiple editions.  He has authored or co-authored more than 60 articles and book chapters and made more than 150 presentations at regional, national, and international conferences.

 

Steve has been a visiting scholar at both Oxford University and Cambridge University and is a member of the Common Room of Wolfson College, Oxford University.  He has given lectures and presentations in Europe, Australia, Asia, South America and has made 14 trips to Russia where he has been instrumental in establishing the first communication courses there.

 

Dr. Beebe teaches courses in small group communication, communication training and development, pubic speaking, interpersonal communication and C. S. Lewis. He made international headlines in 2009 when he discovered a manuscript in the Oxford University library that was the opening chapter of a book that was to be co-authored by C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien.  He teaches a course about C. S. Lewis and Communication at Oxford University.

 

He was named Outstanding Communication Professor in America by the National Speaker’s Association, and has received the President’s Award for Excellence in Research, and the President’s Award for Excellence in Service—the highest research and service awards at Texas Stat.  Steve was also named Honors Professor of the Year at Texas State.  Steve and his wife Sue were named Outstanding Alumni by their Alma Mater, the University of Central Missouri.  He is currently President of the National Communication Association, the largest professional communication association in the world.

  

Dr. John Masterson is Executive Vice President and Provost emeritus of Texas Lutheran University.  He has taught Communication courses for over 30 years and has presented or published dozens of papers and articles as well as four books co-authored with Steven Beebe.  He has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his teaching, his scholarship, and his service.

 

Prior to his move to Texas, Dr. Masterson served the University of Miami (FL) for 22 years as professor of communication, associate dean of the School of Communication,  dean of the Graduate School of International Studies, and vice provost for Undergraduate Affairs.

In this re-issue of a book first published more than two decades ago, Rolheiser, a Catholic priest and author, looks at the deep longing every person experiences and often names as loneliness. He examines its nature and inherent dangers at some length, but also shows how loneliness can bring great benefits, as it often does in the lives of artists. Loneliness, he writes, presents both potential peril and tremendous opportunity for growth, giving birth to the latter when "understood and channeled creatively." Rolheiser develops his ideas by showing how the Hebrew and Christian scriptures and various theologians from Augustine to Karl Rahner have dealt with this basic human problem. He also draws on writers as diverse as the mystic John of the Cross, philosopher S�ren Kierkegaard and novelist John Updike. Kierkegaard, he says, was able to mine beauty from his loneliness by seeing it as a "vocation" and himself as someone who could form his pain into "beautiful music—music that could bring healing to those who hear it." Rolheiser goes on to propose a "spirituality of loneliness" rooted in prayer and "the community of life." Readers who have delved into spiritual classics and the works of contemporary religious writers for answers to this basic human question will be attracted to this book, which eschews spiritual fluff. Wealth of insight for those driven to understand loneliness

In 2004, the year this book was reissued, I was engulfed by loneliness after a deep betrayal by a friend and by my spiritual community. In the time since, I have been driven to not only understand that personal trial, but also to contemplate human loneliness--its causes and its purposes in our lives. This book is the most helpful I have come across regarding this subject.

Rolheiser offers a well-thought out and deep examination of loneliness, beginning with its dangers-- chief among them, its being a roadblock to human intimacy. He then describes the various types of loneliness--alienation,restlessness,fantasy,rootlessness,and psychological depression.

Writing from a Christian perspective, he goes over Old and New Testament reasons for loneliness,including sin, and being a pilgrim on earth. He then writes about 4 great Christian theologians' thoughts on the subject--Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, John of the Cross, and Karl Rahner. I personally loved this section-- to know that others over the past 2 millenia have wrestled with the same issues I do today was immensely comforting to me, and I was encouraged by their perspectives.

He concludes with a discussion of the hidden benefits of loneliness and ways to minimize it in our lives.

A key insight for me is that loneliness will never be fully overcome in this life--we are created for complete union with God, and since that is impossible here on earth, we will inevitably experience loneliness at times.

The only fault I can find with the book is that it does not go into the psychological reasons for loneliness,such as childhood trauma or difficulties with attachment to others. Rolheiser is a theologian, not a therapist, so perhaps he felt that area was beyond the scope of his expertise. Still, I think including a brief summation of that topic would have been helpful.

Engaging,well-organized,compassionate--this book is as timely today as when it was first published.

Loneliness - Our Driving Force to Heaven

We've all heard that there are two sides of everything. In this book, Fr. Rolheiser shows the reader that loneliness can be crippling but channeled correctly can be a creative force in one's life. I like the way he starts with defining what loneliness is, then moves on to the different causes of loneliness and the kinds of loneliness. He doesn't present a treatise on how to cure loneliness but more of a gentle leading that makes the reader understand that as human beings separated momentarily from our Creator, we will always have a touch of loneliness to be back in our forever home.

This book also offers insight on how loneliness affects even our most basic relationships like loneliness can cause overpossesiveness that drives people away instead of closer or being too eager to please can make people uncomfortable.

In the end, Fr. Rolheiser concludes that we are destined to feel some loneliness because of our separation from God but that same loneliness is the driving force that makes us reach out for Him and others.

Hard to put into words the insights of this book. I have had answers to questions I have had for years about loneliness and isolation that as a christian is part of the walk. All I can say is read the book. No formulas here(ie pray more, read bible more, etc) but really helpful insights.

Cannot reccomend this book enough.

are you serious?

I read Sweet Jealousy as part of a boxed set but was annoyed it ended suddenly. But since the story was interesting I went to buy the second one. But are you f'n kidding me $2.99 for 44 pages? These "serial stories" are a crock. It's ridiculous and a slap in the face to readers. It's sad because I enjoyed the premise but there is no way I am going to pay 3 dollars for what amounts to a couple of chapters. Shame on these authors. They shouldn't be able to do this. If you want me to read your work wait until you actually finish a full novel and release it for a decent price and I'll buy it. I'm so sick of these short novellas that end in cliffhangers that could just as easily be released as a full novel.

We're still waiting like this series is soooooo gooooood we can't live with out it, is the Morgan Garrity a serious author or is she stringing us along like a bad boyfriend??!! Well I can say for me this is the end of the proverbial road for me & I am sick & tired of these crackpot authors tossing out these serials & if u don't understand well wake the f up!!!

Kathleen's Piano

One cold December morning some years back, my husband, Mark, and I were driving to the airport, headed to the West Coast to speak at a medical convention. As we voiced our anticipation of warm weather and the excitement of the big city, Mark dashed into a convenience mart to purchase some last-minute items. He returned with a small brown package in his hand and a shivering elderly lady at his side.

What a contrast they were — Mark in a gray wool pinstriped suit and the stranger clothed in a green polyester coat with two missing buttons and a stain on the front. Her half-frozen toes peeked out from time worn sandals.

As the determined lady struggled into the back seat of the car, she flashed a tender smile my way. "My name's Kathleen," she announced boldly. I understand you folks are headed down Kentucky way.ö

Her husband, it turned out, was a patient at a nearby nursing home, and was not expected to survive through the Christmas holidays. The two had married late in life, never had any children, and when their small monthly allotment dwindled, Kathleen often hitched a ride to the nursing home. Like so many Appalachian women of her generation, Kathleen was fiercely independent—a survivor. She usually stayed at the nursing home all day, for even though her husband was in a hopeless coma, the facility was warm, the food was great, and there was a piano in the day room where she could while away the hours and her cares at the keyboard.

As we approached the small, brick convalescent center, I remembered the calling cards in my briefcase. I handed my ivory linen card to Kathleen. ôDon't hesitate to call us if we can ever give you a lift to the nursing home," I said. Kathleen smiled, thanked us for the ride, then confronted the unyielding wind, her thin coat blowing wildly.

When we returned home after our trip, baking, buying gifts and an endless array of holiday errands consumed our days. Kathleen called a couple of times to chat, but it wasn't until Christmas that our paths actually crossed again.

ôDid you take Kathleen anything for Christmas?" Mark asked late Christmas night. How could I have forgotten?

We scurried about the house gathering some remnants of Christmas for Kathleen. As we approached her tiny frame residence, the porch light was still burning. We rang the doorbell and waited. Soon, Kathleen opened the door and invited us in, saying she just knew we were coming for Christmas.

As we stepped inside the living room, our eyes took I Kathleen's short-sleeved cotton dress, the tattered sofa and chair, and rugs taped around each window to protect her from the harsh weather. A bare bulb dangled from d ceiling wire, scarcely lighting the room.

ôThis is 'Honey.' She's an alley cat plus a better breed,ö Kathleen announced, stroking the animal's soft yellow fur. "And Honey and I have a special present for you." Kathleen picked up a xylophone and methodically plunked out ôWe Wish You a Merry Christmas" on its rusted, paint-chipped keys. ôI found this for a quarter last summer at a rummage sale," she said proudly,ö and I've been saving it for just the right occasion.

ôDo you have a piano?" Kathleen quizzed. I nodded, feeling uncomfortable about the grand piano in our living room at home and the nice clothes in our closet. Christmas was nearly over, and in my busyness I hadn't even played a Christmas carol. In our pursuit of the things money could buy, it seemed we had overlooked many of the things it couldn't buy.

ôCould you... would you go home and play 'Silent Night'? You could hold the telephone next to your piano, and I could celebrate Christmas one more time," Kathleen pleaded. Then she shared with us her dream of finding a piano, preferably an old upright model like she'd played as a child. She had little money, but she had faith that God would send one her way.

After the holidays, I combed the classifieds in hopes of buying a used piano for Kathleen. It became apparent, though, that all the bargains had been snatched up by the area piano dealers. I tried to compensate with other small gifts—a pretty blouse, an African violet, a tin of talcum powder.

On Valentine's Day, Kathleen hardly noticed the chocolates I bought her. ôMy piano will be here soonö she insisted. And, throughout the winter, Kathleen's faith intensified. Her strong faith in the midst of poverty was an unsettling paradox; it amazed me, yet amused me.

But later that spring, something wonderful happened, and Mark and I dropped by to tell Kathleen about it. Some family members had sold their home and were moving. The new owner's sole request was that the heavy upright piano in the basement be removed from the premises. Soon.

ôCan you think of anyone who could use that old relic?" they had asked. It's theirs if they move it." Could we ever!

Kathleen ran to meet us when she spotted our car. ôMy piano... it's coming...I had a dream last night. It's coming from a little town I've never heard of near Point Pleasant, West Virginia," she squealed.

ôGodÆs not too far offö Mark mumbled, maintaining a reserved amazement for God's handiwork. The piano was indeed located in a tiny, postage-stamp-sized town only thirty miles from Point Pleasant.

Mark and I could hardly contain our joy. Kathleen was baffled—not that a piano was coming, but that we were surprised. For she had been joyfully expectant since Christmas night, when she put her faith into action. ôI've been playing my piano already in my mind," she explained. ôWithout faith, we can't please God, you know.ö

And ever since the massive, oak upright was rolled into Kathleen's living room, music hasn't stopped flowing. Artistic expression hasn't been limited by her advancing age or glaucoma. Kathleen's husband has since passed away. But music—be it the classics, roaring-twenties tunes or gospel songs recalled from childhood tent meetings-connects Kathleen with the world. She accompanies the congregation at her neighborhood church and joined a senior citizens' band. Kathleen doesn't read music, but she beautifully reproduces what she hears.

Before I met Kathleen, I understood faith in my mind; now I understand it in my heart. For as with all acts of faith, Kathleen's miracle happened not when she received, but the moment she first believed.

Watery Chicken Soup

Got this based on reviews. First time I've been snookered on that basis. I'm sixty-something and found this book sappy, couldn't last past 3 stories. Guess I don't fit the "profile." I do, however, remember one review referring to it as sappy (the only negative one), and now I find that review missing. Is this a way Amazon pushes book sales? By upping review averages? Gave this two stars instead of one because based on the title I should have had a tipoff as to the mishmosh inside. Follow your gut instinct.

Nice collection of stories

I bought this book to read to my 85 year old mother who can no longer read. I am 57. I found that many of the stories contained here are suitable for my adult children and grandchildren. It is a nice collection of stories.
