Lacks coverage of new features

The product description for AWDWR4 includes this paragraph:

"Rails 4 introduces a number of user-facing changes, and the ebook has been updated to match all the latest changes and new best practices in Rails. This includes full support for Ruby 2.0, controller concerns, Russian Doll caching, strong parameters, Turbolinks, new test and bin directory layouts, and much more."

Shockingly, AWDWR4 includes no discussion of some of the aforementioned changes, including Turbolinks and strong parameters, which are the first two subjects I searched for in my copy of AWDWR4. The authors simply included a link to Turbolinks' GitHub repo, and there is literally not one mention of the term "strong parameters" in the whole book! AWDWR4 seems to be a hastily-updated version of AWDWR3, which I also own.

If you already know Rails 3, I recommend that you not waste your time or money on AWDWR4. After realizing that AWDWR4 is worthless, I bought PDF copies of Rails 4 in Action and The Rails 4 Way. (The print versions of these books are available for pre-order at Amazon.) These two books are currently in beta, but they're already over 700 pages long and they include sections devoted to strong parameters, Turbolinks, etc.

In the past, I bought Pragmatic books without bothering to evaluate them beforehand because their books had always been high-quality. This seems to no longer be the case, and I won't buy another Pragmatic book until one is recommended to me by someone I trust. Pragmatic joins O'Reilly in this regard.

In response to a comment on my review, I compared the indexes in AWDWR3 and AWDWR4. What motivated me to compare the indexes was the fact that AWDWR4's index doesn't include entries for either strong parameters or Turbolinks, which is surprising for a Rails 4 book. I checked the first pages of both indexes and here's what I found:

AWDWR3: Action Controller, 309, 321-332
AWDWR4: Action Controller, 309, 319-330
Same number of pages. (These are the pages in AWDWR4 that should have included discussion about strong parameters.)

Good for beginners

This is the second book on Rails that I purchased to learn new features in Rails 4 (the first one being Ruby on Rails Tutorial - I bought the paper copy which covers Rails 3 but the free online version covers Rails 4). As someone relatively new to Rails, I found this book easy to follow. I tried all the sample code and it worked without any problems. The explanations accompanying code is clear for the most part. Since I already learned the Rails way of doing things in Ruby on Rails Tutorial book, the main value addition in this book for me was in Part III - Rails in Depth - a lot is discussed and several ideas tossed around for someone to use in a real project.

The main downside of this book is that some of the treatment is superficial. For example, an authentication mechanism is developed in the book which is good for illustrative purposes but it's not replaced with a relevant gem that's ready to use (such as devise). This book uses MiniTest for the most part for automated tests. In my work place MiniTest is considered to be too basic in terms of functionality/scope and therefore cucumber/rspec/capybara are used instead. This book barely mentions these gems and capybara is not mentioned at all. Another thing to note is that this book does not use TDD but develops tests as after the fact - which is not necessarily bad in itself (depending on your style of development) but something to be aware of.

If you are a beginner to Rails, you can checkout either this book or Ruby on Rails Tutorial book - both will get you started. If you have preference towards TDD, then go with Ruby on Rails Tutorial. Personally I liked the TDD style of Ruby on Rails Tutorial. I suspect that neither of these two books will be very useful to intermediate/advanced Rails developers.

A great starter for a rails noob

I have some experience for C# .net web development as a business information technology student. I'm a complete noob with practically zero knowledge of ruby and ruby on rails. Regardless I find this book very intuitive to follow, and I think if you know any object oriented language to some degree, you can pick this up and start learning ruby and rails easily at the same time.

To make the point clear, I think this book is NOT for total newbies due to the way many concepts are just thrown around without explanation, but great for those who know the basic programming concepts already and just want to read something that makes them see the big picture of rails and get started as fast as they can.

I think I won't be going back to .NET for a long time..

I borrowed the book from the kindle library. Wasn't too sure what to expect. Its a quick read and motivational. I re-read the preface and realized the author meant for the book to be used more as a reference, and now the format makes more sense. I like it. I'll buy it when the month is up.

Dr. Yanchang Zhao is a Senior Data Mining Specialist in Australian public sector. Before joining public sector, he was an Australian Postdoctoral Fellow (Industry) at University of Technology, Sydney from 2007 to 2009. He is the founder of the RDataMining.com website and an RDataMining Group on LinkedIn. He has rich experience in R and data mining. He started his research on data mining since 2001 and has been applying data mining in real-world business applications since 2006. He has over 50 publications on data mining research and applications, including three books. He is a senior member of IEEE, and has been a Program Chair of the Australasian Data Mining Conference (AusDM 2012 & 2013) and a program committee member for more than 50 academic conferences.

Low-quality and savagely overpriced

It's not all bad - I really like the R-resources links in Chapter 15, and give points for Chapters 10 and 11, with basic examples of text mining and network analysis, and for the predictive-modeling case study in Chapter 13. (But why do the percentages on page 172 exceed 100?) However, "R and data mining" is not worth anywhere near $70, and as far as substance and quality are concerned, it is one of the weakest books I have seen. On one hand, you are introduced to several useful built-in R functions and "add-on" R packages, including "party" for classification trees, "cluster" and "fpc" for clustering, "arules" for association-rule learning, "tm" for text mining and "igraph" for network visualization. On the other hand, until Chapter 15, there is pretty little value-added - it's as if the author googled a package, and copy-pasted a vignette from the doc. Things are really basic throughout, even where one might expect complexity - Chapter 14 has the most disappointing example. The page count (200+) overstates content, as the book is seriously heavy on whitespace: code and output, hideously typeset, takes up way more space than needed and is often redundant. I do not recommend the purchase, and suggest "Machine learning with R" by Brett Lantz as a better alternative.

UPD. With the benefit of a little more life experience, I would say: don't spend your time on *any* R book. Python is the way to go.

Not worth buying

I have only read a draft copy that the author has / had on his website, and it is a very disappointing book. For example, the content about each data mining method is very sparse, and as one other reviewer noted, with lots of white space, code, and output. Very little comment about how to use the methods in practice. It certainly looks as though for these chapters the author has copy / pasted material from R package documentation. Not worth buying, there is a lot of other material available of much better quality.

A good supplement to classroom and textbook resources

My kid's high school no longer issues take-home textbooks; the physical books stay in class, and students have access to an online version. It's pretty frustrating to use an online textbook for homework or studying, and classroom notes only go so far. This isn't as complete as a real textbook and doesn't cover things as comprehensively as a beginner might need, but it's a decent addendum to other learning resources.

This book handled all 3 of my concerns: first, it gives my kid an opportunity to see chemistry concepts and problems explained in a different way than what he got in school; second, it's an easy-to use reference for homework; and last, it serves as a refresher for me (his reluctant tutor who learned Chemistry many years ago). I've used other "Dummies" books in the past, and found them all decent in covering their subjects, same for this edition.

Entering a Chemistry class which is a requirement for my RN degree worried me. I was worried that because I had not taken a chemistry course in high school my grades would be hindered. This prompted me to check Amazon in search of a solution. I decided to purchase Chemistry for Dummies. It is amazing how just skimming through this book familiarized me enough in Chemistry lingo to understand my class. I highly recommend, "Chemistry for Dummies". vaf

This is the book born of the grace filled encounter of Jentezen Franklin and Elmer Towns.
There are now so many titles that really don't draw the distinction between fasting and dieting.... what makes THIS book different is the distinction is unambiguous.

The BEST snake book!

This is it. If you are looking for a book that covers everything snake with lots of pictures, you have found it. This has general information and husbandry, taxonomy, and goes through all the snakes, not just the popular pets and famous venomous ones. It also has information on responsible pet ownership. And it is enjoyable to read!

This atlas provides you with information starting with the evolution and biology of snakes. There are thousands of snakes pictured with information regarding each species and/or subspecies! I took this atlas with me to a reptile show and it really came in handy!

One of the best novels ever written!

Milorad Pavic has been my favourite writer since I chanced upon a copy of Dictionary of the Khazars in 1993. Everything about that novel was enthralling, and I wondered how he would ever be able to equal it. So I approached Landscape Painted With Tea with some trepidation. However, in my view, it is superior to Dictionary, in language, themes, plot, ideas, conceits, characters, and everything else you can imagine. Most of the reviews I've read concerning Landscape are cautious, usually praising its originality but expressing doubts about the rigidity of its structure. Take it from me, this novel is beautifully constructed, but unlike Dictionary, an appreciation of its complex structure isn't necessary for an engrossing read. However, the reason I prefer it to Dictionary is because of its extreme lyricism -- Pavic's style is phenomenal. His use of outrageous metaphors, stupendous conceits and absurdly profound dialogue is intoxicating, like angel-flavoured absinthe. Anyway, the point of this review is to express my enormous love for Pavic's fiction, and this novel in particular. He's knocked most of my other favourite writers down like skittles. Indeed, I find myself growing increasingly bored with all other writers, and I find myself waiting for his new books like an impatient lover.

Lyrical and Playful

It's difficult to comment on this book because this is a book that almost defies comment. One has simply read it...or one hasn't. It is the lucky one who has.
In this lyrical and playful novel, Milorad Pavic tells the story of Belgrade architect, Atanas Svilar and his journey through life, a journey he hopes will answer the question, "why had his life been barren and futile, despite the enormous effort invested?"
His journey leads him to an ancient monastery on Mount Athos in Greece, that holy mountain reserved for men, a mountain where no woman has set foot for centuries, the mountain where Atanas' father disappeared during World War II.
Since Atanas doesn't find all he is seeking on Mount Athos, in Book Two, he abandons his family, changes his name to Atanas Fyodorovich Razin and moves to the United States with the beautiful Vitacha Milut. There, something goes his way at last, and he becomes wealthy, at least in a material sense.
Like Pavic's first book, "Dictionary of the Khazars," "Landscape Painted With Tea," is a playful enterprise containing chapters that can be read "down" or "across," much in the same way a crossword puzzle is read. The person who solves the solution to the ultimate puzzle is said to have the key to the solution to the puzzle of life. While I didn't find the key to life in these pages, I did find fun and enjoyment, and, not surprisingly, quite a bit of beauty. So much so that I'm recommending the book to all of my friends.
If stark realism is what you enjoy, you'd probably be better off skipping this book. Those who love writers who can spin magic with words, who are playful and inventive as well as creative, will no doubt love "Landscape Painted With Tea" as much as I did. "Dictionary of the Khazars" made me a Pavic fan; "Landscape Painted With Tea" has simply cemented my admiration for this playful and inventive author.

Knees Need To Read, Thumbs Only Twiddle

As exceptional Serbian author, Milorad Pavic always says, "The future always starts from the large intestine." This may be taken as either prophecy or advice. In either case, you should begin the rest of your future by getting ahold of this novel. Of course, as he says, "Whoever wants the second half of life has to remain in the first half of everything else." Let's hope this does not mean your large intestine. But if we concentrate on Pavic' story, rather than on his aphorisms, I think we can quickly conclude the dude is a genius, though one who is not easily understood. What can we say about a heroine who falls in love with you, the reader ? The protagonist with several pasts has several futures too. He is a Yugoslav architect whose designs are never built, but in one future he builds exact replicas of Tito's luxury palaces in the New World. His father was a Yugoslav soldier who disappeared in Greece, or else he was a Russian mathematician who could shovel snow extremely well. The hero winds up extremely rich, but lonely. Or maybe lonely, but extremely rich. Does it have to do with those people who like to work in sync with others or those who prefer to be lone wolves ? Pasts intersect and divide, the future is over though it hasn't started either. Yes, you will dig the leaping non-sequiturs that lead to larger truths or else you will be left scratching your head. Hey, if you always admired Bob Dylan's great songs like "Subterranean Homesick Blues" or if you found Dali's paintings intriguing, you are going to grok this novel in all its fullness. If however, you want a linear, conventional book, forget this one completely.

When I was very little, I had a small purple stone which I swallowed. I never let on to anyone. I felt purple inside. So when I saw a purple stripe on the cover of this book in the library, I knew I would either read it or eat it. Now I can't remember what happened, but as a character exclaims in LANDSCAPE PAINTED WITH TEA, "In sleep, one doesn't age." The same is true with volumes in your stomach. Or was that `brain' ? You can read this book like a crossword puzzle---literally. The author took great pains in its construction, which recalls (Argentine author) Julio Cortazar in some bizarre way. I read the novel in the conventional fashion (or I ate it with a knife and fork) not because I have a stolid or military personality, as Pavic would claim, but because I admire turtles, who always take the shortest route to the pond. The Tajiks say that eels never swim towards the sun. The readers of this book will not wind up enlightened either, but they will be delighted by the author's wit and imagination. Or they will get a stomach ache.
