Excellent guide for action against viral hate

i am surprised at the people who have "reviewed" this book. I seriously doubt they have even read it. for one thing, the book does not advocate government regulation of the internet, far from it. the authors suggest many things that can be done to combat the problem of viral hate including parents talking with their children about the issue. one of the things the ADL and the authors have done is to work with social media sites, not to police or restrict free speech, but to develop standards and ways of coping with hate postings. this is a fair, well thought out, informative book.

I suggest these "reviewers" read the book,they might learn something!!!!

Interesting, with Important Points -

The power of the Internet lies in its viral nature - anyone can be a publisher, even the most vicious of haters, aided by the ease and rapidity with which websites, social media pages, video and audio downloads, and instant message can be created and disseminated make Internet propaganda almost impossible to track and combat. Links, viral emails, and 're-tweets' enable lies to self-propagate with appalling speeds. Hitler and the Nazis could never have dreamed of such tools.

Racially-centered movements, rabidly anti-government militia groups (often using code words such as 'survivalist,' 'constitutionalist,' and 'sovereign,' quasi-religious groups that cloak ultra-conservative agendas in rhetoric about 'religious freedom,' abound. Such groups include Stormfront, Hammerskin Nation, the National Socialist Movement, the New Black Panther Party for Self Defense, and Nuremberg Files site (publishes names and addresses of physicians providing abortion services, thereby inviting attacks). Benign facades are designed to lull visitors into assuming the site is legitimate - sprinkling a few facts among many distortions and lies. Some are sponsored by pseudo-academics whose work has repeatedly been exposed as shoddy and inaccurate.

Don Black, former KKK grand dragon, noted that the Internet 'has been the greatest recruiting breakthrough in the 30 years I've been involved.' Numerous Facebook pages have been created that deny the Holocaust, attack Obama with racist comments/photos, ObamaCare, etc. Huge numbers of online sites sell hate-oriented books, games, movies, etc. that very few reputable retailers would stock. Some detail the 'secret history' of sinister manipulations supposedly behind eg. the U.N., the Federal Reserve, and Hollywood, while others offer advice for terrorists and resistance fighters.

U.S. courts have been reluctant to rule against free speech, especially presumptively. Many European nations have hate speech laws that permit censorship. Arab citizens sometimes extrapolate and conclude such material on U.S. sites must therefore be approved by the U.S. government and official policy.

The authors then explore legal options and educational remedies - unfortunately, not likely to succeed.

My one criticism is that the authors unwittingly take the position that most any criticism of Israel, various races, etc. is inappropriate.

The content was not what I was looking for. I then looked at the authors and realized why....don't waste your time. They complain about everything, but the catch is....what they are complaining about is what they are doing. The difference: one is print and the other is on the net.

Actionable Knowledge on How to Profit on Sentiment Analysis

Trading on Sentiment assumes there are patterns in the markets and that a subset of these patterns are driven on sentiment. The book sheds light on how to use this information to profit in the markets. This is the first book of its kind I have ever read, and I have read a fair number of books on finance.

I have read a few books on behavioral finance in the past, and while they provided interesting and some potentially useful information, I believe Trading on Sentiment provided more valuable, actionable, and thoroughly explained insights on how to actually trade using behavioral finance principles. For instance, one of the books I read previously used the Rosemarie Nagel experiment as an analogy to explain how traders attempt to predict each other. The first book, however, came to the conclusion that predicting markets is inconsistent at best. By contrast, Trading on Sentiment used the experiment as motivation to begin a discussion on game theory strategy levels and how they play out in modern behavioral finance.
While the book might seem to be set on the notion that sentiment is the prime mover of asset prices, the author actually maintains a fairly impartial tone on the matter throughout the book. Instead of falling down the rabbit hole of speculation, the author reframes the question to a more manageable and precise form - What causes traders to buy and sell? Simply, traders respond to information relevant to an emotion, mental model, belief, or expectation. This is the assumption the rest of the book proceeds from, and the author provides real evidence from behavioral finance to support this claim.

Chapter five is the first chapter that delves into predictive analysis based on sentiment data, and I found it to be one of the most valuable chapters of the book. Chapter five’s discussion of forecasting models built with TRMI data towards the end of the chapter was especially enlightening.

The book uses the Thomson Reuters MarketPsych Indices (TRMI) as its primary source of actionable sentiment data. The TRMI target a number of market-moving sentiments based on news and social media sentiment. The book also cites earnings conference call transcripts, product reviews, and Google Trends (search) data to explain sentiment trading principles. I found the TRMI data to be the most valuable in general because it distilled sentiment and investor expectation down to a single indicator that could be plotted over a price chart. In addition, it aggregates a number of disparate sentiment sources using large scale text analysis and is specifically built for trading on sentiment.

All in all I found the book to be well written and an excellent primer to trading on sentiment from a professional who knows what he is talking about.

The most detailed book I've read on trading sentiment

Richard Peterson's books have always been very enjoyable and this one is no exception.

I was impressed by the amount of researches that this book cited and the details of the discussions.

One thing I don't like that much is the conflicts of interest in this book.

The data used in this book is not freely available to the public and most of the strategies in this book use this data. I wish MarketPsych team could release at least 5 years of data for us to test on.

As a Tactical Trader, Sentiment Analysis is one of the pillars my process is built on. Trading on Sentiment is great introduction for novice traders and refresher for the experienced. It is well written and while contradictory at time, doesn't read like a dry academic tome. Thomson Reuters MarketPsych Indices (TRMI) is arguably the most comprehensive sentiment analysis platform available to Market Professionals and to have TRMI data provide the backdrop for the content in this book makes it exponentially more valuable.

Should be added to reading lists of Trading Firms the world over.

�Poems with power.,�November 24, 2014To say the poems found in this collection were extraordinary is putting it mildly. This isn't your dreamy walk on the beach holding hands or gazing longingly into a lover's eyes all done in rhyme. Here, a single word has the power to speak in volumes and send you on a journey into the uncertainties and the joys of connecting through love. Are we worthy of love? Can love heal a wounded soul? Each word is crafted by a master artist to touch those emotions most of us have experienced in love, and in life, and make us feel again. At least this was my experience. I read this collection two times, and each time discovered a new facet. I'll be reading it many more times. Thank you, Ms. Hodge, for the journey.

These poems represent a personal journey -- from being alone, feeling emotionally removed and wounded to finding another person, unexpectedly, and having my world completely altered. � Ultimately, the friendship and love of one person unwrapped the emotions that I had deeply buried, thus, I became "Undone."

Undone And Loving It

This collection of poems is a Treasure and I am putting it at the very top of my bookshelf!! The Descriptive words of passion get me to daydreaming and the more light hearted poems get me smiling. I hope there are many more new poetry books to buy in the future from EM Hodge, one of my new Favorite Authors.

Beautiful.

One of my many discoveries in reading Undone is that a one word line is still a line, not just a word. E M Hodge’s lovely compact lines give my eyes the patience to linger and focus instead of searching towards a horizon to see where things might be going. This collection is a masterfully powerful combination of literate and learned philosophy with unapologetic urgent physical desire. As I continued to read I found myself feeling as if something in my memory was struggling to get free and connect. Then it came to me. I felt the way I did when I first read Rumi. E M Hodge’s poems have a spare and prayer-like longing for desire to be fulfilled. Beautiful.

Fun without being silly. Witty without being asinine. Inspiring!

I read several of the reviews after I bought the book but before the book arrived. I am 42 years old, and a veteran of self-help. I began my self-help journey when my last child was born when I was 26 years old. During that journey, I built my life from a trailer-trash person living in chaos to the Mother of the Year Award-receiving, self-trained entrepreneur I became. As my children became grown and then gone, the things I identified myself with, the labels I placed upon myself, the passions that drove me, the purpose I had went with them. Pretty typical. But, because of my history with self-help, I assumed I would be immune. After all, I know who I am, right? I know what I want, don't I?

In this new evolution of my existence, I revisited my familiars. Abraham-Hicks, Wayne Dyer, Don Miguel Ruiz - - I'm sure you guys know them, as well. Their words, while valuable, fell flat for me. Meditation, yes. Being still, yes. Listening to the inner voice, yes. I listed myself to death - to-do list, action list, five year list, three year list, one year list, daily plan to accomplish the lists. Positive affirmations written on little yellow sticky notepad and placed everywhere. Big whoop.

I accidentally happened on The Fire Starter Sessions. I was cruising Amazon looking for some dog mats to lessen the dirt traffic into the house from the doggy door. Down in a little corner was The Fire Start Sessions, Look Inside. So, I did. It intrigued me enough to buy it. I also visited Danielle Laporte's website to get a feel for the author. The website is AMAZING! It's frenetic and energetic. The energy that went into building the website bounces right off the screen. It puts you in an amazing mood immediately. Takes you out of the mundane and the humdrum and instills passion.

Some of the reviews have said that the book is quippy, does not provide any real information, gives too much sass, and has everything you have heard before. I agree with all of that, but without the negative undertone. Danielle Laporte is refreshingly quippy, saucy, and sassy. Thank God! Someone put some personality into a book! Yes, Wayne Dyer's calm demeanor is wonderful (and I LOVE me some Wayne Dyer) - but I'm not calm! I don't want to be calm. I want to be fired up! I want to be passionate! I want my life to be a kick ass life! I want to be self-aware, but I want to be awesomesauce self-aware, not meditative self-aware!

Yes. At 42, I use words like awesomesauce. As a matter of fact, my kids and I text the word awesomesauce to each other.

In a nutshell, if you are new to the self-help game, this book is great! If you are a veteran of the self-help game, this book is GREAT! It is refreshing, it is youthful (thankfully!), it is powerful, it is motivational. It is fun without being silly. It is witty without being asinine. It is an inspiring beginning to get back to the core you, the authentic you, and reinvent your Self and your circumstances.

I also bought The Desire Map, which I will read after working through the Fire Starter Sessions. I'm excited about it!

Ummm . . .

Danielle LaPorte has been beating this same drum for years now. This is old material of hers, and frankly if you ever read a few of her blog entries you've read the material in this book. I was disappointed with this book as I thought she would go into more depth and/or bring different material into this book than I had found years ago on her blog. She didn't.

However, I do think Danielle has a good message to deliver, and I think that she is a spiritual, intelligent person. I just don't find her to be quite as brilliant in this book as her resume would lead you to believe. [Really - check out her resume - it is amazing!]

One way to decide about this book is to go to her blog and check out the archived blog entries leading up to the publication date of this book - you'll find all the contents there (with the exception of not so inspiring exercises that she includes in the book).

I recommend this book very highly

Wow - I love this book. The author is a bit avant-garde and her approach is unique, but I learned so many fantastic ideas in this book that I can't deny it is now one of my favorites. She does a wonderful job of asking extremely powerful questions and I found myself underlining many, many passages that were, at least to me, profound. After finishing the book I went back and answered some of the questions she poses and found my answers exceedingly helpful in guiding my life in a better direction. I recommend this book very highly.

Julia T. Wood is the Lineberger Distinguished Professor of Humanities Emerita at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She joined the university at the age of 24. While on the faculty, she was named the Lineberger Distinguished Professor of Humanities and the Caroline H. and Thomas S. Royster Distinguished Professor of Graduate Education. Young Latinas grow up dealing with two, often conflicting, sets of expectations about how they should look, how they should act and how they should dream, points out Molinary, a poet, teacher and first-generation Latina born to Puerto-Rican parents, in this study. Drawing on the responses of more than 500 women who answered an extensive survey, Molinary lays out the most pressing tensions and obstacles for Latinas around issues like body image, religion and sexuality. In chapters titled Turning Gringa and How Latina Are You? she weaves together her own stories with the anecdotes of her survey respondents. The extensive quoting of other Latinas imbues the book with an honesty that will likely be appreciated by young readers. However, Molinary often overuses these voices, which drown the narrative structure. At its best, the book is a pastiche of honest and emotional insights that come together to reveal a shared experience. At its worst, it comes off like a sloppily prepared sociological report, with little storytelling finesse. Though more suited to skimming than reading straight through, the book is likely to be a source of comfort for many young Latinas. (June)

**Long Review** (for a condensed version, skip down)
I would have to part from the majority of the reviews here, especially the ones that suggest this book applies universally to women. While there are elements of the book that the majority of women can relate to, it is clear to me from the larger messages that Molinary's attempting to get across that 1) the point is not all women are essentially the same with basically similar experiences when you get down to it, and 2) while some of these issues share a level of commonality, Latinas are affected much more deeply not only by these common growing pains but by their intersection with identities and issues unique to Latinas. People mention the common topics discussed by Molinary but fail to point out the discussions about the unique ways in which Latino parents often inadvertently add pressures to finding one's Latinidad by either wanting their kids to fit into the mainstream more--thus stripping them of the right to speak Spanish at home and visit Spanish-speaking nations or become close to the homeland of their parents--or constantly reminding their kids that they aren't white...which I sense from several stories that reminding Latinas that they aren't white is almost the same as telling them they aren't really American. Most also fail to mention the struggles Latinas obviously face balancing their parents' views and pressures with social pressures experienced from white media and white peers. These issues are far from what the average white American female experiences or even has any clue about.

And as a black female reading this book, I often found I couldn't relate to the feelings, concerns and pressures of the Latinas interviewed, as well as Molinary. However, you don't have to be able to relate to enjoy this book. Quite the contrary, reading this book makes you aware of diverse experiences happening in the US, and that's valuable. Since other reviews attempt to essentialize women and tell you what they could relate to, I will elaborate on what I couldn't relate to:

There is an extreme emphasis on the Latinas' relationship to authentic American identity, as well as comparisons to whiteness and/or the longing to be white or actually feeling white in some ways. I have read several books about what Asian Americans experience growing up in the US, and it's amazing how similar the experiences and mindsets of these two groups are. The emphasis on and struggle with American identity (i.e. wanting to be perceived as American and/or just as American as white Americans, and being hurt/angry when they're not) and seeming idealization of whiteness are two of the things I never understood about Asian American (and Latino) stories. In other words, I don't understand why it's so horrible to not fit American ideals or why it's so personally important to almost every voice in these stories to do so, on one hand (on the other hand, this is basically what Asians and Latinos come to America to do, i.e. achieve the American Dream, which basically must be done through assimilation).

And I don't understand why American identity is always conflated with whiteness by Asians and Latinos in their stories, and yet they still believe that they should be included in such an identity--what about blacks...or, when an Asian is speaking, what about blacks and Latinos...or, when a Latino voice is speaking, what about blacks and Asians? My point is not to say the Latinas in this book are not truly American, just that I don't understand why they cared so deeply if other people didn't see them that way since, obviously, blacks are also often kept out of authentic American identity and we seem to care far less than Asians and Latinos do.

Like many other books about the cultural experiences of a particular group growing up, these issues are left unexplained and unexamined, but are simply mentioned or indirectly brought to the surface through individual stories. Thus, this book does more than tell the experience of Latinas growing up in the US or reveal how women are basically the same--it also speaks volumes about the racial thoughts and relationships between Latinas and people of other races/backgrounds in the US. The one notable difference between Latinas and Asians is that many of the Latinas expressed that, despite the sometimes seemingly lopsided focus on whites among the Latina participants and Molinary, they feel a great affinity towards other racial minorities in the US (Asian American stories stick almost exclusively to whites and Asians).

Another issue that comes up time and time again throughout this book that I don't relate to is the importance of beauty to Latinas, even with my being a female. The discussion in the chapter "How Latina Are You" regarding how different skin shades among Latinas can affect their interactions with each other and the rest of the US does match the black experience somewhat. But comparing oneself as a Latina to white standards of beauty--and in many cases while simultaneously comparing oneself as a Latina to the Latino standards of beauty--don't match the black experience, I don't feel, since I don't believe black women compare themselves to/feel the need to fit white standards anywhere near as much as other groups (or, at least, I haven't).

**Short Review**
My point is this: I would say that this is a good, educational read. I don't think this book is as tedious or bothersome to read as a couple others have indicated, even though her writing style is repetitive. Her writing style lends the book to a very easy-to-understand read, with nothing interfering with the stories and the voices of each Latina participant. However, you're not going to get anything out of this book if you're missing the bigger points of the stories, i.e. you're not going to come away fully understanding the Latina struggle in the US and how that differs from--and is even impacted by--the identities of other groups in the US. If you read this book, which I do suggest, pay attention to what is both experienced by you as someone from your particular background AND what is NOT experienced by you because you're from your particular background. That is where the richness of and the true learning from this book lie.

Uplifting, insightful, helpful.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Molinary for a book article and I was pleasantly surprised by her approachability. Being of Spanish/American descent myself, I grew up feeling I was not "Spanish enough" in Spain or "American enough" in the US. Now I feel blessed to have one foot in each culture and feel like I belong to both. Molinary's book tells of her own struggles growing up Latina in America, and about the conflicting messages received at home, by her peers and by the media. She now also admits to having reconciled with her heritage and who she is. She shares the stories of countless other Latinas of different backgrounds and weaves their experiences into a book about body image, self-image, and about loving oneself because of one's differences and not in spite of them.
A very inspiring and helpful read!

Incredible Book!

This is one of those books that you won't soon forget! Molinary gives moving, funny, and thoughtful anecdotes of her life blended with stories and experiences of other latinas in the US. I wish it had been available when I was a young girl, but I can still take away so much from it as a 33 year-old woman. I could not put it down and read it in two days! Thanks to the author for putting so much time and research into crafting a book that could help millions of woman see themselves for the beautiful "hijas" they are. This is a timely, empowering read!

The Definitive Account of the Air Apaches

Ever since I first read about the strafer units of the 5th Air Force in World War II, I have been fascinated by their stories. Flying in at treetop or masthead height, they decimated Japanese airfields, facilities and shipping from New Guinea, Rabaul and the Dutch East Indies through the Philippines, Formosa and the southern coast of Japan.

The 345th Bombardment Group, known as the "Air Apaches", was one of the premier strafer groups in the 5th Air Force. Flying B-25 Mitchell bombers, most of which were modified to carry extra .50 calibre machine guns in the nose, the Air Apaches earned a fearsome reputation as they carved a swath of destruction through Japanese defenses.

Covering nearly every mission flown by the group, this book is a comprehensive and extremely detailed account of the war fought by the Air Apaches. Loaded with pictures, including many in color, and a section of color profiles showcasing the very colorful markings of the various squadrons, you will never find another book which covers the group this well. The photos are fantastic and include hundreds you will not find anywhere else. The author has gone to great pains to identify each plane and/or person shown in the various pictures, most of which came from personal collections of members of the group itself. The narrative contains lots of details about what individual crews went through while attacking Japanese bases and shipping, as well as the aftermath of those who were shot down and ended up being rescued or subsequently captured.

This is without a doubt one of the best books on the air war versus the Japanese I have ever read, and it is the first in what looks to be a very extensive series about the 5th AF's bomb groups. Fans of the 5th AF, the B-25 and/or the War in the Pacific must add this book to their library--I can guarantee you'll never find a better book on the 345th.

"WARPATH ACROSS THE PACIFIC" best squadron history to date!

This book on the 345th bombardment group "Air Apaches" in the pacific theater of world war two, is a must read for anyone who is interested in aviation history during the second world war. Lawrence Hickey has not only created a complete history of this famous outfit but the photos that the group took when overseas, both during combat and non-combat stand downs, are stunning in their clarity. Each photo was laser inhanced and put in the exact order that they were taken by a day by day operation in each of the chapters in the book,and there hundreds of photos! There are very good color profiles of the group's B-25 aircraft as well, a very nice addition to a already great book. "WARPATH ACROSS THE PACIFIC" is only the first volume of a series of three being written by Lawrence Hickey and his research staff, "Revenge of the Red Raiders: the Illustrated History of the 22nd Bombardment Group in World War II" and "Eagles Over the Pacific" to which I plan purchase these as well in the near future.

My favorite novel of all time

I've had a hard time when people asked me what my favorite book was, until I read Marathon Man... what amazing voice... and terrific plot. So inspiring.

Vintage suspense novel

William Goldman's "Marathon Man" is my favorite novel of all time. I have probably reread it 20 times. It can act as a virtual textbook on the creation of suspense and terror. Goldman has a firm grasp of what frightens people. He juxtaposes different points of view very effectively and creates characters which you cannot help but care about. It contains what is probably the most famous (and infamous) torture sequence ever commited to paper. The novel is violent but doesn't glorify violence which is a very delicate line to walk on. Goldman is wordsmith without peer. His prose sparkles and is memorable. He lately has been concentrating on screenplays and has not written a novel since 1986 (which coincidentally was a sequel to this novel called "Brothers".) I can only hope that he finds the time to produce a few more novels. Thirteen years has been too long to wait for another Goldman novel. Read all of his novels, you won't be disappointed.

A marathon with teeth

I had high expectations going into "Marathon Man" because it was written by William Goldman (of "The Princess Bride" fame). I’d hoped that Goldman could write a thriller with the same humor he injected into "Princess Bride". Was there humor in "Marathon Man"? Not really, but Goldman certainly knows how to keep the reader intrigued, and there are several scenes I won’t soon forget. Something that might be a positive for readers is that the pacing roars along, allowing readers to frantically flip pages until they’ve finished the book in one sitting. The characterization lacks a bit, but I will say that Goldman knows how to write torture, death, and chase scenes which really covers all the bases in a thriller. And the '70s feel is most enjoyable. To this reviewer's mind, thrillers are more interesting when they aren’t utilizing the newest technology and people have to base their life-and-death prospects on skill and luck rather than their knowledge of advanced weaponry. Plus, who doesn't love reading about assassins going after assassins?
