About the Author
John Wickins graduated in zoology at Southampton University in 1966. He then led research programmes on crustacean biology. Culture, recirculation systems and artificial habitats at the Conwy Laboratory of the Centre for Fisheries, Environment and Aquaculture Science (formerly Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) until the laboratory was closed in December 1999. Before taking early retirement, he was an honorary lecturer at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, and travelled widely on short-term advisory and assessment mission related to crustacean aquaculture.

Belfast-born Dan Lee became involved in commercial crustacean aquaculture in South America, initially as a biologist in Semacua, the first penaeid shrimp hatchery in Ecuador, and later as designer and technical manager of another Ecuadorian hatchery, Macrobio. Originally a graduate in zoology and marine biology at the University of Wales, Bangor, he returned to North Wales after five years and then worked on a series of shrimp hatchery and farm projects in Asia and Africa in the roles of research assistant, consultant and manger. He went on to gain MSc in project analysis, finance and investment at the University of York and remains active in commercial shrimp farming, currently from a base in the Caribbean.

This great book is for the therapist working with children and adolescents, where the therapist can use the material as homework, handouts and activities in therapy. The editors, Catherine Ford Sori, professor of psychology and counseling at Governors State University, Illinois and Lorna L Hecker, professor of marriage and family therapy at Purdue University in Indiana, have together with 36 professionals compiled a very important tool for the therapist.

Good workbook/reading for beginning clinicians

As a therapist, I was somewhat disappointed with this workbook and have not used it very much in my practice. Some of the activities are unique and helpful, but most of them require too much preparation or are too advanced for the families I work with. Most of the instructions are very long, and some are confusing. I see clients every hour, so I want something I can pull off the shelf, become familiar with, and prepare in a short amount of time. Most of the handouts that are to be given to clients are printed in small print and hard to read and some use language that is not understandable to clients who have low reading levels. I think this book would be more helpful to new clinicians because it discusses the rationale behind each activity, and includes vignettes that show how the activities helped certain clients, suggestions for follow-up, contraindictions for use, and suggested readings.

Decent advice overall. However, the five point emails need to be modified.

So I've seen the five star reviews, and the one star reviews, and I have to disagree with both.

The one star reviews mention you having to pay for something like a database subscription? You don't, unless there's another version of the book they're reading. If they're talking about alumni associations, it should be free. But if it's not, then just get a Facebook or LinkedIn account and look up your school to get in touch with alumni.

I do have to agree that the first section on "finding jobs" might be a bit much. It describes how to prioritize jobs that you find, which might not be important if you plan on applying to EVERY plausible job you find (which I've done from time to time). But the one-star reviews complained about the process of prioritizing jobs using Excel. I actually found that part very helpful, although I came up with my own scheme for prioritization instead of using Mr. Dalton's.
Anyways, so I don't agree with the one-star reviews on these things.

However, I don't agree that the book holds up its promise of a 2-hour job search. The author claims that the success rate for a five point email is around 40%.

Here are the actual numbers. I've been using this book for exactly one month. I've sent out about eighty emails/LinkedIn messages to people I didn't know over the last month. (Now I only send out LinkedIn messages since finding people's emails makes you feel like a stalker (I'm surprised how easy it is to find people's emails :-x), and although I've gotten a few nibbles by sending those emails, I've been able to connect better by LinkedIn).

Forty of them were EXACTLY like the one in the book, asking for an informational interview. Forty of them just asked a quick question without asking for an informational interview by phone.

Of the first forty, only one replied. He later was busy (which is understandable) and replied to the questions I asked in about two paragraphs. I'm thankful since he was the first one who replied, but he would be classified as an Obligate in the book, someone who feels like they SHOULD help but won't really help you get a job.

But then I modified the Five Point Email to just ignore the part about an informational interview.
The next twenty, I removed the part about the informational interview, and I got about four responses back. These are nice and short, but they really don't help much, and you can't tap into them again. Again, obligates.

Afterwards, I made a modified form of the five point email:
"Dear Dr. X,
My name is Y. I'm a Z at ABC university who stumbled onto your (LinkedIn) profile while browsing for Q.

The reason that the teens so closely resemble one another is gradually revealed: they have the same father, a famous musician who was attracted to Lexi's mother because she reminded him of his deceased first wife and never knew she had his child. Although Lexi doubts the ethics of subbing for Kari in concerts, she does it to meet her dad. Being a stand-in is hard work and Lexi can barely leave the publicist's apartment–no one is to know she exists. That doesn't stop her from running into her idol, Grant Delray, and they fall in love. Tabloids run pictures of Lexi (in her Kari persona) with Grant, and she ends up in major trouble. When she finally encounters her dad, he's furious that an imposter has been playing his daughter. Amazingly, everything is tied up neatly. This novel doesn't do anything new with the fantasy of becoming a celebrity or being the daughter of one. Alexia Garcia can't believe the offer that comes her way after a mean girl's prank on her backfires when the photo catches some surprise attention. With her uncanny resemblance to pop star Kari Kingsley, Kari and her publicist want her to play the role of Kari's double, filling in for Kari at a handful of events and small concerts so the real Kari can concentrate on working on her long delayed album. The offer seems too good to be true, and her mother is decidedly against the idea, especially when she confides the identity of Alexia's father, something that's been a secret all of Alexia's life. The girls' resemblance isn't so much a coincidence, as the two are half sisters, a piece of knowledge that spurs Alexia to quickly agree to the plan and move to California for a chance to get to know the half-sister she never knew existed and for a chance to meet her father.

I really enjoyed MY DOUBLE LIFE. While Alexia struggles to fit into her role as Kari's double, including a complete make-over with hair extensions, dance classes, a designer wardrobe and more, she finds herself facing some unexpected issues of her own. With the physical distance between her and her mother and grandmother, things aren't exactly the way Alexia thought they'd be. Add in her developing feelings for fellow teen star Grant who thinks she's really Kari, and not only is Alexia confused, she's also torn between doing exactly what everyone expects her to and what she feels is right. I have to say I really liked the friendship of sorts that forms between Alexia and Kari and the way that Alexia wants to help her half-sister out of the trouble she's in, which I wish would have played into the story a little more. However it didn't make the book any less enjoyable. I have to say my favorite scene that still makes me smile is when Grant goes to drop 'Kari' off after their date and instead of taking Alexia to where she's living with the publicist, he takes her to Kari's home. Alexia panics but it looks like maybe no one is home, until she hears footsteps in the house. Between dealing with a very confused poolman who tells her that she just argued with him in the driveway (obviously the real Kari) and Kari's real boyfriend showing up after Grant leaves, it's one enjoyable mess.

The Pop Princess and the Pauper

A self-described "half-Latina" from a small-town, working-class family, Alexia Garcia is a dead ringer for twenty-something pop sensation, Kari Kingsley, who is also half-Latina. The amazing resemblance leads to a lucrative job offer to serve as the secret double for Kari at some of her public appearances so Kari can focus on completing an overdue album. Alexia's mom is strongly against the masquerade because, as she confesses for the first time in Alexia's 18 years, Alexia and Kari share the same father. He's pop legend, Alex Kingsley, the lead singer of The Journey Men--a fact that both Alex and Kari have been kept in the dark about as well. Alexia is furious at her mother for hiding this crucial information from her, knowing how much all her life Alexia has wanted to know about her father. Since Alexia is legally of age and doesn't need her mother's permission, she takes the job Kari's publicist is offering and heads for Los Angeles.

In adult romance novels, there is a classic story line called the "secret baby plot," in which the heroine had a baby years before that the hero never knew about. This is the first time I've ever personally heard of a novel where the "secret baby" is the heroine. What a great twist!

I am a huge fan of Janette Rallison and have read every one of her young adult novels. I must confess I was a bit disappointed initially on realizing that, other than a couple of scenes of comic relief, this story is light drama, not her usual laugh-out-loud comedy. But I quickly got into the book because, no matter what type of story she chooses to tell, Rallison is a great writer. All of the things I normally enjoy in a Rallison YA novel are here in spades: vividly three-dimensional characters, strong conflict, and compelling love stories, both familial and romantic.

Alexia is a dynamic and compassionate heroine, and her efforts to get to know her half-sister are emotionally moving. The complications created by Alexia's pretending to be her sister are both painful for Alexia and occasionally very funny for the reader. I particularly enjoyed Alexia's romance with teen heartthrob Grant. It is extremely well done, and I really liked Grant, who is not just gorgeous and sexy, but a thoroughly decent guy. One of Rallison's strengths has always been her ability to write a good romance plot, and as usual, she shines at that here.

Perhaps most moving of all is the growth in Alexia's relationship with her mother and the eventual outcome in Alexia's quest to know her father. The resolution of that portion of the book brought tears to my eyes. It was also a nice change to be able to experience YA-novel parents as caring nurturers. And not only that, but as deserving of a chance at achieving romantic happiness as well.

Another great book by Janette Rallison! I just love her books! My Double Life was about a girl named Alexia who lived in a small town called Morgantown, West Virginia, (which ironically is that same place I lived for 1 yr. on my teen yrs.). She lives with her mother and grandmother and has never met her father and doesn't even know his name. Her life is pretty boring and normal until someone sees her picture and says she is an exact look alike of a famous rock star named Kari Kingsley. Suddenly her life changes when Kari asks her to play her double and go to events pretending to be her and be paid thousands of money for each event. She finds out who her dad is and that if she goes with Kari to be her double she'll get a chance to meet him. Soon enough she is pretending to be Kari and enjoying all the perks that go with it, like a hot famous boyfriend, paparazzi, clubs and concerts. Things get really complicated when she can't even tell her boyfriend or her dad who she really is.

Like I said, this is another great book by Rallison! The reason I love her books is because there just a simple book about a teenagers life. They make me laugh and there always a fun read. This story line was very cute! Everyone pretends they are a celebrity at one point in their lives and how amazing would it be to actually professionally pretend you are your celebrity look alike! Very great story, easy going, up-beat and just an enjoyable read!

I have taught biochemistry to medical students and to undergraduates and graduate students, at both Temple University School of Medicine and at Case Western Reserve University, since 1968, so that I have had a great deal of experience in the field and have a feel for what works well for medical students.
Medical Biochemistry at a Glance would be an excellent book for USMLE Step 1. In my experience, medical students (and pre-medical students) would greatly benefit from reading it in preparation for the exam.
This compares very well with Lippincott’s Biochemistry - this has the right price and approach to compete with Lippincott for a less expensive and more accessible alternative to the larger text books that are out there.
I like the way it combines the metabolic pathways and principles in such a creative fashion, and the metabolism sections are among the best I have read and the easiest to understand. Metabolism is a very complicated subject and, in my experience, most teachers of the subject would really benefit from your text. (Richard W. Fantastic Book

This is a great book for any medical professional, whether doctor, researcher, med student or nutritionist. It captures the major metabolic pathways in an easy to read format, with just the right mix of text and diagrams. The author's larger volume entitled Biochemistry at a Glance has even more in-depth information on the pathways, but fewer clinically relevant tidbits. I own and use both books. In fact, they are part of my go-to library of must-have reference books, spending more time out on the desk than sitting on the shelf.

I don't know if these come in an electronic format, but I bought the paper editions. With lots of graphics, ink colors and oversized pages, I think this would translate poorly into an eBook.

Great little Supplement for visual learning of Medical Biochemistry

This book saved me in the first year of medical school. I had a very poorly organized biochemistry textbook, with lectures that were not any better. I am a visual learner and needed large, detailed pictures that give an idea of the 'big picture.' That is where this small text excelled. Most of the major, basic pathways needed in medical biochemistry are covered--from TCA cycle to purine, pyrimidine, fat, and amino acid metabolism. I was not a science major in college so I needed major reviews on biochemistry.

Each 'system' is usually depicted on 2 adjacent pages, with many annotations, and usually a short, concise clinical note; but overall the majority of the page is taken up by the diagrams.

If you like systems diagrams to learn with, and need some good, visual, 'big picture' biochemistry study aids, I highly recommend this text.

Excellent - in the same league as Salway's Metabolism at a Glance!

Way back in 1998 I came across Salway's Metabolism at a Glance, and ranked it as Excellent, Concise and Thorough! I would give the same designation to this book as well. Snippets of information are provided in each chapter, and under each diagram, that succinctly provide crucial information on each specific pathway - information that would be quite useful to a medical student or to a bio-medical researcher studying mammalian or human metabolism.

Her storytelling pulls the reader so hard, it's impossible to put down the book. Thanks, Annette Broadrick for another wonderful read. Another good in love with the boss story

That is if you like those kind of stories. The two main characters in this book are Brad Phillips and Rachel Wood. Rachel is Brad's assistant. She has been in love with her boss all of the eight years she has worked for him. For all of those eight years they have had a stricly professional relationship. That is until Rachel asks for a leave of absence thinking that she is in danger. Brad can't image his work life without Rachel so he wisk her away from Dallas to South Carolina and the next that Rachel knows Brad is asking her to marrying him. Marry him? Not the kind of marriage Rachel wants. Brad is offering a marriage of convenience. Will a marriage of covenience turn to a marriage of love?
