LBJ aims to prove that Vice President Johnson played an active role in the assassination of President Kennedy and that he began planning his takeover of the U.S. presidency even before being named the vice presidential nominee in 1960. Lyndon B. Johnson's flawed personality and character traits, formed as a child, grew unchecked for the rest of his life as he suffered severe bouts of manic-depressive illness. He successfully hid this disorder from the public as he bartered, stole, and finessed his way through the corridors of power on Capitol Hill, though it's recorded that some of his aides knew of his struggle with bipolar disorder.
After years of researching Johnson and the JFK assassination, Phillip F. Nelson conclusively shows that LBJ had an active role in JFK's assassination, and he includes newly-uncovered photographic evidence proving that Johnson knew when and where Kennedy's assassination would take place. Nelson's careful and meticulous research has led him to uncover secrets from one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in our country's history.

Review
Researcher / Author of "Bloody Treason," Noel Twman on LBJ: The Mastermind of JFK's Assassination: "This book is very comprehensive about Lyndon Johnson as related to the JFK assassination. It is a well written book, easy to read, and exhaustive in its summations of the scores of other writers on this profoundly disturbing time in history. I strongly recommend this book. Nelson explains why so many of us held back and gave LBJ the benefit of the doubt when we knew in our hearts how bad he was."
James Fetzer* on LBJ: The Mastermind of JFK's Assassination: "LBJ-The Mastermind is a "Masterpiece. . . beautifully written. . . Brilliant and pivotal, bringing coherence to our understanding . . . From first chapter to last, this is a beautifully written, intellectually captivating, and ultimately persuasive account of the role of LBJ in the assassination of JFK."
*James H. Fetzer, Ph.D., author/editor of three major works on the JFK assassination: Assassination Science (1997), Murder in Dealey Plaza (2000), and The Great Zapruder Film Hoax (2003).
Publisher's Weekly (12/05/2011)
Nelson reviews a massive amount of secondary sources to support his own hypothesis that the mastermind behind the assassination was then-VP Lyndon Johnson. LBJ's position as Kennedy's successor and "narcissistic/sociopathic personality," combined with his fear of a Kennedy plan to remove him from the upcoming 1964 ticket, form the basis of Nelson's conjecture. He dismisses the Warren Commission review of the evidence as a cover-up, stating that "it has become more and more apparent that much of the evidence originally put forward ... was invented or modified."
Booklist Review - David Pitt
"Keen-eyed readers will notice that the author's argument ultimately rests on a simple assertion: LBJ was the only person who could possibly arrange JFK's assassination, so therefore. axiomatically. he did it. If you buy that, the rest of the author's arguments flow (mostly) logically; if you don't, well, the book is still a fascinating read, full of some very clever creative thinking. Nelson definitely hasn't proven LBJ's guilt, but he's built an intriguing and thought-provoking case."
"Exhaustive in its summations of the scores of other writers on this profoundly disturbing time in history."--Noel Twyman, author of Bloody Treason
"A fascinating read."--Booklist
A masterpiece . . . beautifully written. --Jim Fetzer, "The Real Deal"
From the Author
A new softcover edition is being prepared for publication in July, 2013, which will mark the 50 year anniversary of JFK's assassination. And another book, a "sequel" of sorts, will be ready for publication in the latter part of the year; tentatively titled "LBJ: From Mastermind to "The Colossus" - The Lies, Treachery and Treasons Continue. The new book will validate and vindicate with new evidence many of the assertions made in LBJ: The Mastermind of the JFK Assassination. Furthermore, it will reveal even more of his treasonous actions as President.
Together, the two books tear off the veneer of LBJ as the great, magnanimous leader, the "Colossus" according to Bill Moyers, in his review of Mark Updegrove's paean to him, written to continue the construct that has been built by many other authors during the last half century. The new book will expose how Johnson planted lies that he knew would grow into "truths" through future books like these, even though these "truths" were conceived within his delusional mind. Those lies grew larger and larger during his presidency, finally forcing him to walk away from the very office that had been his life-long quest, his "destiny," to which he had been propelled by cross-fire in Dallas that he planned and facilitated.
From the Inside Flap
Fully 80% of Americans do not believe the Warren Commission's finding that Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone, murdered John F. Kennedy. Yet most of those people don't know what to believe because there has never been a comprehensive and compelling alternative. This book is unlike most books of the genre in that it provides evidence of Johnson's complicity in the assassination of John F. Kennedy and lays out an alternative hypothesis on what happened in Dallas on November 22, 1963. In the process, it also answers many of the questions left in the wake of the long-discredited Warren Report.

HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR 58,000 AMERICAN DEATHS......PLUS ONE?
By Phil Silverman
Have not read every word. What I have read has made my hair not stand up but return in places.....
I'm not convinced LBJ wrote a blueprint but am I convinced - I should say - further convinced, that he and shall we say, "benign conspirator" Hoover, let it happen ...in the "right place" at the "right time". Then, jumped all over the early investigation: it appears that within 12 hours,. the real hard evidence, found in the limo and of course, horrifyingly, on the body of JFK, was wiped clean. You decide if all that was for the security of the USA.
If you are like me, and did not know about the "real' bullet hole through the windshield, for this reviewer, impossible to happen from a 6th floor perch, then , as they say in cliché-land, fasten your seat belts.
Pages 334 to 344 contain some of the most pupil-dilating stuff I have ever read about 11-22-63. Don't want to give it away: chapter on "Conspirators". An expanded version of that chapter alone and we got a fantastic book!
There's a lot more here than 11-22-63..but if you believe that this guy from Texas, who basically started a huge war (essentially with 48 hours of the assassination) that his predecessor was determined not to start, was also capable of "killing" a domestic civilian, the buy this book and read it 6 times. I'm so startled by parts of the 11-22 analysis, that I can't seem to go back to page one and do it right.

Circumstantial
By W. Russell Turner
Mr. Nelson has made a strong circumstantial case for Johnson's masterminding the assassination of JFK. There is an even greater reason (still circumstantial) to believe that he had guilty knowledge of the act. Without going into all the reasons for this opinion it is important for people to understand just what kind of person LBJ was. Mr Nelson accurately describes him as sociopathic, narcissistic, paranoid and boorish in the extreme. As often happens with the passage of time figures become mutated into something much greater than reality dictates.
Let us not forget Johnson's stubborn attitude to send thousands of young men to die in Viet Nam and to slaughter many more Vietnamese and Cambodians. This he did to satisfy his ego and to see that there were cronies who realized very large sums of money.
Was he capable of engineering the murder: certainly; would he have taken advantage of a plan made by others: most certainly.

Definitely Worth Reading
By David W. Tarrant
Nelson pulls together the many threads of Assassination research that have been developed over the last 30 years, and weaves them into a mostly-coherent, well-written history. Based on my prior reading, he has the facts as correct as it is possible to discern them. His analysis of circumstantial evidence and application of rational conjecture generally fits my view of the flow of events - although at some point one must realize that many specifics are still lacking due to the nature of the crime and its subsequent cover-up. Given these limitations, Nelson has done a very creditable job of developing a solid, believable description of the roots of the assassination and how the political forces in the post-war era shaped conditions that led to it. The exact role of LBJ may never be known fully but it has long been obvious to me that he had a hand in it. After reading this book it becomes very difficult to avoid concluding that this hand loomed large and ominous, wielded by a ruthless sociopath who short-cut democracy in a cold-blooded act of self-serving murder. Mastermind is the sort of book that one tends to keep on the coffee table, re-reading passages at random. If you have a serious interest in the Assassination it is a must-read.
