Death Voyage

I read the first book on the Hawks murder and felt this was a story that should have been told in greater detail. More information was needed on Skylar Deleon and his wife Jennifer. With "Reckoning" you get that information and more. You find yourself wondering: Was Skylar born a killer or made one? Would either of them have done something like this without ever meeting the other? These questions come up as you read the chilling and scary tale of the murder of one couple, by another couple -- for their boat and life savings. I guarantee you will not be able to put this book down. The author lays out the story in great detail and keeps you interested from start to finish. "Reckoning" plays out like a horror movie where you can't believe what is coming next.
Tom and Jackie Hawks have it all, a great marriage, a loving family and lots of friends - They worked hard and retired on the sea, living on their yacht and sailing to beautiful places. When their first grandchild arrives, they realize they want to be close to their family so they decide to sell their yacht and buy a house. Enter the greedy Skylar and his misfit wife, Jennifer. Skylar and Jennifer want the boat but don't want to actually buy it. They want to steal it, and believe they can get away with it. Deleon tells the Hawks he is a former child actor from a popular children's television show (he appeared in one episode) and has money to invest. After taking his pregnant wife and toddler to meet the Hawks, the Hawks are convinced they are dealing with a decent young family. Later, Skylar returns with two thugs. What you will read is absolutely terrifying. A must read for any true crime fan and definately for the first time reader of the TC genre.

a difficult decision giving this book 4 stars. I struggled following events during the first half, and I'm an avid and voracious reader of true crime. It appeared information was scattered, however, by the middle it began to smooth out, but inserting the victims backgrounds nearer to the end, or 3/4's through, read like an afterthought as opposed to building from the beginning, which is what I've become accustomed. I can understand how difficult this must have been to write, for the author, lots of unusual information. I was outraged to learn CA, or any state for that matter, would pay for GRS, that taxpayers bear the brunt of these costs, in addition to trial costs! How can someone on death row have any such rights. I realize until that person is put to death by the state, keeping them alive (for ex. heart attack, appendicitis, emergencies) require medical attention, which is bad enough, but sexual reassignment surgery.....outrageous! I appreciate the author making this information known. Unbelievable....

Fascinating and timely

The murder of the entirely innocent couple in this book is just the beginning of a case that is cold, calculating and unlike any you've ever read before. Yes the perpetrators are caught and as happens so often, they've had a less than happy childhoods. But with updated information in this edition, the author really digs into the motive for these seemingly senseless murders. Skylar Deleon is seeking a huge change in life. And since he is unable to get it through stealing his victims property he makes a case for having the penal system help him out from death row. Issues surrounding gender reassignment and to what extent a prisoner has rights as a transgender give this story unique twists and turns that you have to read to believe. Recommended highly for readers of all kinds. Terrific writing. Story moves along well. Thought provoking to say the least. Well done!
